Scaly-Tailed Mantis den

IMG_5394wa.jpg

That's my Rain-X golf rain glove covered index finger attempting to show the large size of the hole which, I *swear* had just been *filled* by the front part of a mantis shrimp. I had had no idea that they came that big. I had just left my little boxfish buddy and couldn't believe my eyes - nor luck. I was shooting with a 60mm lens with a +4 diopter, and when I got close enough to the shrimp's hole for the lens to focus, the big shrimp disappeared. I was heart broken.

After waiting a good while for him to reappear, I finally gave up and looked down inside the hole. It was *really* deep, and seemingly perfectly cylindrical. I surfaced and marked my position relative to the bridge piers. This was last Thursday afternoon late, just before it got dark. I checked back each day through yesterday, but was never able to find that cool hole, again. I've since learnt that he was a Scaly-Tailed Mantis (Lysiosquilla scabricauda).

Nice work, Kevin.

Critter?

IMG_5465wa.jpg

I wonder if the pink and yellow disc-shaped thingy in the lower left of this shot of a smallish jawfish is a creature of some kind. Hadn't noticed it until going through the pics from Friday's morning dive on the computer, but it looks pretty symmetrical. . .

Chromodoris

And speaking of tiny little symmetrical critters, a few minutes later I came across my first ever Chromodoris - clenchi, I think. My first shot. . .:D
