AG has an explanation for why he does the valve drill by shutting the left post and breathing the reg down . . . it has to do with cementing the association between the post and the reg. I didn't find the argument convincing, so I didn't remember it very well. GUE does the sequence the way they do because it more closely approximates what you would do in the event of an actual leak -- when you wouldn't be breathing the backup reg, so you wouldn't breathe it down, but purge it instead. These are really minor, picky details in my view.

I should hope so.

There is no reason to deny anyone the right to bungee their long hose.

It provides a feeling of accomplishment and safety to the diver with the added value of perplexity and amusement to others.

Exactly...
I didn't say it was right, just said it really is a person's choice. Who are we, the masses, to say "dude, your rig is all fugged up.

Who are we to call someone out for cave diving untrained for that matter?

Both are stupid, stupidity needs to be pointed out.

GUE postulates that the drill will approximate a real failure diagnosis sequence.
UTD postulates that the drill is just a drill to get you manipulating the valves and associating hand movements (on-off) with consequences for different outlets.

They are both right and wrong simultaneously :) The bigger issue is people just memorizing a sequence which may or may not be useful in real life.

Other instructors/agencies shut down the isolator first for their own reasons...

I've got you all figured out. It took a few weeks, but it's apparent now.

Glad to know you have a complete profile ;)

BTW, were you with Randy at REACT? I saw a post implying you guys dive together, but I didn't put 2+2 together this weekend when Randy and I were chatting.

Randy joined me and Dean for a dive when Randy's buddy had congestion problems.

ah okay, nvm then. I was going to say you should have introduced yourself. Or put a photo in your avatar and I'd know to say hello to if we crossed paths. Haven't met Dean either, but then again I've over committed myself with diving stuff recently, so I rarely even have time to meet people on the weekends :-/

Well, truth be told, I try to keep forum Pete, and RL Pete separate. I'm a nice guy in RL, I'm not so nice on the forums. Wouldn't want people to get the wrong impression based solely on some text from SB and CDF

.........would be great if someone could explain it to me..

Cheers
James

James, I've been following this thread for a bit. My only concern is that I don't hear back from you something that signals that you really understand. And by that I mean understand immediately when something goes wrong.

You have three valves. Number one, first and foremost: can you reach all of them and turn them on and off at your will?

Next: Your post valves only turn off what is connected to that post. Do you plan to breathe your suit or your wing?

Why would you put your main secondary reg on one post vs. the other?

If you have a serious free-flow, what do you plan to do?

-you are moving along nicely, trying to help...
