I'm a Fish!
I'm curious about what happens after being an instructor. While the "career" path of PADI is pretty spelt out explicitly leading to Course Director listing the requirements of each step, the path in NAUI is pretty much the opposite. Nothing can be found on the Internet (I can't find it anyway).

So I know that Staff Instructor, Instructor Trainer and Course Director are not certification per se in NAUI but a designation, but what are the exact requirements (as spelt out by NAUI, if any) to attain those certifications?

Staff Evaluator is a workshop completer, they take the workshop before every instructor course with the IT or CD. IT & CD are designations by headquarters. A member that has been teaching as a staff evaluator can take an IT workshop from a CD.

Where are you located? You can message me for more information.

Exact requirements are also listed in the S&P for IT and CD workshops.

After you have been certified as an active status Instructor, you may participate in a staff training workshop (STW). Here you learn to help evaluate future Instructor candidates. After you have taught 3 classes, including a leadership class as an Instructor, you may enter an instructor training workshop (ITW) where you can be designated an Instructor Trainer. After you have taught an ITP ( instructor training program ) and staffed an ITC ( instructor training course ) as an IT, you can enter a CDW ( course director workshop ) to become eligible to be a Course Director. There are a few variations to this pathway such as doing cross over courses instead of or in addition to those listed above, but that is the pathway to the question you asked. Hope that helps.

Thank you everyone who answered. Makes it clearer now.

ScubaDocER, what is the difference between ITP, ITC and IQP?

Good question. The path to be an Instructor involves going through an ITC ( Instructor Training Course ). The ITC is broken into 2 parts : The ITP ( Instructor Training Program ) and the IQP ( Instructor Qualifying Program ). The ITP involves the bulk of the actual training where you go through all of the skills you will need to demonstrate, the background information on NAUI as an organization, the by laws, the Standards and Policies (S&P), and oral presentations. This can be taught by an IT (Instructor Trainer) or a CD (Course Director). Once you have completed all of that, you can enter the IQP which can only only be conducted by a CD. There you will have to demonstrate your water skills, presentation skills, and anything else they may want you to show. If they feel you are ready, then you will be signed off as an Instructor.

Thanks for the clarification.

So where does the staff trainer comes in during the ITC?

Is being a staff trainer through the STW a mandatory step or one can just skip it by teaching enough classes to qualify for the ITW?

It is not required to go through a STW to be an IT. When you are being evaluated as an Instructor candidate (the ITP) there will be at least 2 people there, maybe more, depending on the number of people in your Instructor Candidate class. These people will meet beforehand to go over the evaluation techniques they will be using and to make sure they are on the same page regarding how the course is to be conducted and how you will be graded. This gathering is called the STW. To staff the STW you have to be at least an active status Instructor.

Thank you very much. Now everything is clear lol!
