we've only got one D6 in the trash bin,a few D9s but mostly Vytecs.

i made a mistake the other day, in Thailand, Suuntos are only 'guaranteed' for 12 months , but only the first one you buy, after that only 3 months .

on our last 6 deco dive wreck trip, only one Vytec went down - a record low

Reduced...... As I know, it was only ONE year from the begining. :no

When I went diving in Malta, my Stinger went nuts on me.. effectively, it seemed to work ok.. but when I compared to my DM, we realised that my DC showed 5m (!!!) too shallow.. fortunately I was diving with my girlfriend, so I was well within margine. But I don't want to think what would have happened had I been deep and gone towards limits...

Now, the good news is that when I contacted Suunto (I was quite angry), they immediately dispatched a new DC to me to use while they repaired mine, and sent mine back after a couple of weeks. So, good service in fact.

But feels like the service isn't the problem here...! I must admit, while I understand that all technical stuff can malfunction, there are some things that just need to be subject to such rigid quality controls that failure hardly makes the stats. How common is this problem really?? Should one start diving with a backup??

Hossier......when we brought the original Vytecs it was on a two year warranty the last mths they have reduced to one year in Asia.Maybe different where you live

I have the original warranty papers.

so please no finger wagging fella....

My Cobra had a depth sensor problem.

I bought it in 2003 here in Hawaii, with a two year warranty. 1 year 11 months after purchase, the depth sensor went bad. I returned it to the LDS where I bought it and it was eventually replaced with a new computer.

And two years later, that computer went bad. I'm still waiting to hear if there is any warranty on the replacement computer or if I am SOL.

edit: I didnt mention, I have a Cobra

Well, unfortunately, it looks like I might be in the club too. I went on a trip last weekend to south florida. Before the first dive, it was saying I was at depth (99ft!) while I was in the dive shop. Their service tech said that, even though the battery indicator was reading fine, it could be a battery problem. Since I always cary a spare with me, we replaced it. It quit reading 99 feet and seemed to be working fine again.

Then on my last dive (of 6 over 3-days) I happened to keep watching my depth on the way up from my safety stop. It said I was at the surface when I had at least 4-6 feet left. While concerned, I thought it was not a big deal since I had generally hit exactly the depths mentioned in the dive briefing.

Finally, when I got home and was giving all my gear the "really good rinse before storing away till next trip," the computer comes on and says I am at 37 feet.....in my bathroom.

Now I am ticked. :angry2:

I will admit, I got it off of e-bay, so I dont expect any sort of warranty service or consideration. However, I have used it very little, and from the sounds of it, Suunto wont give a rip to help me. I have always been a finatical supporter of suunto products, diving and otherwise, but I might have to look elsewhere if I end up having to replace my computer.

Having been in the dive industry since the early days of computers, and having dealt with all the brands and models during that time, the one trend I can tell you hI have seen is the same trend that has happened in all electronics. Mfg's are making them with cheaper parts and selling them at cheaper prices and expect the customer to throw it in the bin when it breaks. Granted it should definitely last and be safe for the warranty period, but i cant tell you the days of any computer working 5-10 years is long gone. I tell people it seems the newer models have a built in self destruct of 2 years and a few days.

I hope Sunnto is watching this thread and do something. I was thinking of getting Vyper2. When I asked the price my LDS told me to wait for a while.
