i have a old stinger never had any problems with it replaced battery and still ok.If it were me and id just paid 300 pounds or 400 dollars and they sent me a replacement with a 3month warranty id send them a letter asking for a 1/3 refund or a send the whole lot back and ask for a full refund stating my customer rights, ref (goods not fit for purpose of intended use)

Thanks and thanks again for saving me the $$ on a purchase of a Suunto D9. I was ready to get it from my LDS which included a free Advanced class with the purchase. Still more expensive than LP but I like the service level of this LDS.
I hope Suunto will read this post and this entire forum.
Ok, back to shop again for a computer. Meanwhile, analog console all the way.
Off topic: I hope AquaLung doesn't give the same dis-service of Sunnto, because I'm waiting for one of their BCD's to become available to purchase it.

I have over 500 dives on my D9 and over 800 on by backup Cobra. Battery replacement only. The do read depth the same within a foot or so but the tank readings vary by up to 40 PSI. I'll add they were both bought in Canada before I moved here to the Philippines.

Vytec hoseless non-DS, primary, two years old, no problems, from LP.

Second mosquito as backup, from LP, no problems. During dives I compare depth and time remaining and they match. SO FAR !?!?!?!

After reading this thread I understand what happened to my first mosquito, which was acting as a backup.

My next combination of dive computers will be different brands not just different models.

Firing companies with bad service or outright lies is the only to fight back. They can only lose a good reputation once.

Hertz cheated me in Antigua = fired. Ecost.com didn't honor rebate = fired. H-P just tried to charge me a fee to tell me what cable to use to hook up my laser printer to a new computer = they just lost a laptop and printer sale.

Thanks for giving your fellow divers a heads up. Most of us work too hard for our dive money to just throw it away on crappy, dangerous equipment.

Thanks for the heads up. I was about to get a D9 but after reading this thread and seeing no response from Suunto my mind has certainly changed. Will now start research on Aeris Epic.

I really like my Suunto but after reading the many issues and lack of customer service, I will not purchase another one of their products.

I am not trying to be sarcastic. However, I wonder why you and others' continue to buy and use Suunto computers. This "faulty depth sensor" is well documented, and so is the dissatisfaction that many have received when they have attempted to get ther Suunto's repaired. Last, but far from least is the fact that 'programming a Suunto' (particularly for Nitrox) requires a degree in Computer Science, and is very difficult without the manual. There are other computers available (such as Oceanic computers) that can do the same things as Suunto, but are reliable, easy to use and program, and, in the unlikely event of needed repair, will be repaired promptly, with a smile, at little or no cost. (by Oceanic). I know of a person who's Suunto Cobra failed. Like yourself and others, she replaced it with a brand new Cobra. I don't get it??? Does Suunto require you to sign a contract with them; stating that you will only do business with them, no matter if their product operates correctly or if they fail to give good service?

By the way, Aeris, Oceanic, and Sherwood computers are all made in the same place (by Palegic Industries) and all share the same reliability, ease-of-use, and ease-of-programming.

Managed to get some kind of response out of Suunto.

After reading this thread, I also tried to contact Suunto to ask about possible problems with Vyper depth sensors. My wife and I are new divers and wanted to check on recommended precautions or batch problems with the Vypers, prior to heading off to a liveaboard in the Maldives (we're just back - fantastic diving; no problems with the Vypers on our trip).

Like most of you, trying to get info from <helpdesk@suuntosports.com> was a waste of time. After one month and 5 automated replies promising me (but never delivering) an answer 'within 72 hours', I copied the next request to the UK site and to their press office and their parent, amersports. After that, I started getting answers within 2 hours !! Apparently the UK site contacted them, so you should probably copy your requests to them if you want an answer :
info@suuntodm.co.uk, press@suunto.com, amer.communications@amersports.com

the answers were a bit generic, as expected, but at least it's written down.
First I asked if there were any known problems with the depth sensors, giving the link to this thread as my concern. They answered:

Dear Sir,
Thank you for contacting Suunto.

Your email concerning your Vyper dive computers has been forwarded to our helpdesk by Suunto Diving UK.

With regards to your Vyper querie :

Unfortunately Suunto cannot comment on random posts in web forums from unidentified persons.

Suunto takes it's products and product quality extremely seriously and ALL queries about our products that are addressed to our helpdesk are answered in a timely and professional manner.

There is no recall on any Suunto dive computers at this time. The last dive computer recall was issued sometime in 2006 for the D6/D9 dive computers only - this recall concerned the software on theses dive computers only, not the components. Full information on this recall can be found at the link below :

Suunto Worlds - Important safety notice - Suunto D9 and D6 diving instruments

There is no know issue with the depth sensors on Suunto dive computers.

While Suunto dive computers have an extremely low failure rate unfortunately NO electronic device can be guaranteed 100% free from failure.

The Suunto Vyper manual states :
WARNING! USE BACK-UP INSTRUMENTS!
Make sure that you use back-up instrumentation including a depth gauge, submersible pressure gauge, timer or watch, and have access to decompression tables whenever diving with the dive computer.

With Best Regards,
Suunto Helpdesk

I also asked if there were any problems with transporting the Vyper by plane (see post #149 in this thread). They suggest there might be if you fly with the computer on - maybe useful to know. They wrote:

2.
There is no problem taking your Vyper on a plane (either in the hold or in the cabin) but as a precaution it should not be actived before hand.

With Best Regards,
Suunto Helpdesk

hope this helps

cheers

Fraser
