Hi Mas,

Reference the Drager FGT 5400. Some semi-closed circuit rebreathers can be converted to closed circuit rebreather for use with oxygen prior to diving, during the apparatus preparation stage. Some have a capability of switching from mixed gas to oxygen underwater during the dive. These are military grade rebreathers used for explosive ordnance disposal on nitrox or for deep lock-out from submarine, initially on nitrox and then switching to oxygen for approach to target.

The limiting factor with oxygen is that you cannot go deep, max about 45 ft for about 10 mins. Oxygen is normally used for long swims at about 15 ft max. There is always the risk of oxygen poisoning (O2 hit) on long swims.

Thanks for the information. Do you also know about the names of Dräger most recent CCR military/ commercial models for deeper than 50 meters.

So you want rock solid information on a large corporate organization that will make a high volume commercial success of a future rebreather?

The future isn't that planned. If someone knew the answer, they should be buying lottery tickets instead. That level of detail could be so much more profitable.

The rebreather market is about as strong as it can be right now. It is highly available in several versions. There really isn't that much that could be done to make them more affordable. It is a niche market inside of a niche market. Huge growth is selling a few hundred more units, not tens of thousands. The primary niche market of scuba divers is the first cap. Inside that niche, how many have a desire, have the mentality? Economics of a rebreather aside, I don't see that as the major holdback to the growth. Large corporations won't pour the money into such a tiny market. Never see a return on investment. This is where the small companies shine. It is more of a passion project to make a better rebreather. Not trying to cover the huge costs of big business that has to show a profit to the stake holders.

Thinking big corporate is the future, your thinking is flawed.

I just hope they do. So tell me do you also think the thinking of Head Sport/ Mares is flawed too with all their 2,500 people who sells more than $700 million a year when they bought the rEvo iii?

Or is it just our thinking is flawed for asking about big companies and gathering information?

I really would like to understand why this fixation on "big company". Why is there like a real, proven and definite gain in any safety standards, if a big company does something? They have to develop and go through experience as well - and they want to do it in a money efficient way. So how can you be "sure" thats so much better, that you would want to wait for it.

I believe you may find many examples of well performing "small" companies in _specialized_ areas. And also fails of big companies or say products which fall behind the products of smaller companies in terms of quality/function.

I am hoping the trend of big companies continue for making CCR more mainstream. As this will benefit the industry and safety overall.

This is interesting... How would it benefit the industry and the safety? I think rather the opposite, it would make statistics worse

Look at the number of aviators how it grow in last few decades from nothing into millions when big players decided to make it mainstream. They can change training practices and can enforce the culture at least for hundreds of thousands of technical divers.

Do you have any business case to share about it (I mean an article or something similar)

Nice to hear you mention the big manufacturers, their reputation, and their dedication to safety... Would you dive a rebreather if Boeing made it?

Let’s not get carried away; I’d like to keep away from the MIB that go pew pew 😅
