Hello all,
First timer. I am needing some Caribbean recommendations on travel destinations for my wife and I. I love easy diving and she loves relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, of course shopping and we both enjoy a little nightlife. The closest I have found to that would be Roatan. Lovely island, but been there twice now and looking for somewhere new. I guess I am asking for your best vacationer's combo island for the diver and non-diver. Your time and thought are appreciated.
Thanks!

Aruba and Curacao both have good diving and nightlife. Aruba has better beaches, Curacao has better nightlife.

Shopping in Coxen's Hole? Are you serious? Coz has lots of shopping and nightlife and a few good beaches. St. Thomas is the shopping mecca of the Carib, has great beaches and a nightlife.

Don't get me wrong, I like Roatan - for diving. But, for a non-diver, it is more like a 3rd world country than a Caribbean vacation spot.

I haven't been everywhere, but I've been a lot of places. My top choice for diver/non-diver destination would be Aruba. St. John USVI or Burmuda would be close behind. Note that the topside of these three places differ in the extreme. All have great beaches, but that's about the only similarity. Aruba is a desert but has casinos and great food galore. St. John is tranquil, laid-back, and mostly a quiet national park. Bermuda is the most beautiful place I've ever seen. It looks just like travel brochures and post cards. Clean and orderly with an interesting mix of tropical and non-tropical vegitation. It's very British and somewhat formal in many ways.

Diving is good in all locations. Aruba is the easiest diving. St. John is pretty easy, too. Bermuda has a real range of stuff and the boat ride can be rough.

If it matters ... None of these places is inexpensive, but St. John is by far the least expensive when it comes to food and drink. Bermuda is the easiest to get to, from the eastern/middle USA anyway.

Have a great trip!

You are definetly right about the shopping in West End and Coxen Hole, but it was the closest we have found to everything we both enjoy so far. I am refering to your average Mexico-trincket shopping, not a Sax on the island. Thanks for the reply. Those third worldish islands are most often the best.

We just got back from Curacao. While we still prefer Bonaire I think if I were taking a group with both divers and non divers I would seriously consider Curacao. You get diving close to Bonaire in ease but many of the sites are developed so snorkelers or beach people would be happy. There are loads of restaurants, casinos and shops to keep the non diver entertained. Here is a link to my trip report http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=106525&highlight=herman

I would also suggest Curacao. Nice easy diving & snorkeling, lots of good restaurants, variety of shopping, very interesting city to explore, casinos.

Bonaire Definitely. Perfect place for diving, snorkeling (Renee Snorkel Trips does EXCELLENT) snorkel trips very cheap. Nightlife is relaxing, Mariachi on Monday's at Karel's Bar, Bands during the weekend. Excellent restaurants, Divi Flamingo Casino. Rum Punch Party and BBQ with music by Moogie on Fridays at Buddy Dive, Art Galleries, quite a bit to do. Don't want to dive or snorkel...think about Mangrove Kayaking, a sunset cruise on the Caribbean Sea, Powersailing, Windsurfing lessons, Horse back riding, Sunday afternoon at Cai with local music and plenty of Amstel...Lot's to do..

Okay, I think I get it. Diving and some "island primitif" artsy shopping.

I'll go with Bonaire. Lot's of little quirky things, remotely located artists, odd ball restaurants.

The Out Islands of the Bahamas have great straw markets, but are best seen from island to island, not just parked on one for a week. You can search out any number of local artisans.

I will say, on Roatan, if you think you saw the best of it on the West end and in Coxen Hole, you prolly missed the good stuff. (And contrary to other posts, I find the AI resort based experience between Belize, Cozumel and Roatan... Roatan has far and away the best diving....(at CCV) depends on the breadth - not the 132' depth- of your knowledge base, I say) Not everyone on Roatan gets to see merchants that essentialy are a juried art show.

Ahh, the stuff I have brought home for my cats to knock off the shelves!

I suppose it depends on how you define shopping. Some women are serious shoppers and are looking for good prices and duty-free Gucci handbags. Cozumel offers serious shopping like St. Thomas including jewelry, designer handbags, shoes, perfume, cuban cigars, etc.

Everyone has given you good suggestions - although I once paid $26.00 for a hamburger at the Westin in St. John and didn't find St. John an inexpensive destination. I think St. John is by far the most beautiful Carribean island, but didn't recommend it because we spent $8000 on a family vacation there.

Cozumel is not like any other part of Mexico. Some people don't like the sometimes over-agressive merchants, but I like the industriousness of the local people. And the hotels are spotlessly clean. The food is surprisingly good and often cheap. The diving is absolutely better than Roatan and arguably Belize. There are plenty of non-divers at the resorts for spouses to hang out with. That's an important consideration too.

Cozumel, Belize and Roatan share the same reef system. You might consider Belize since it is similar to Roatan and you haven't been there. I found the diving better than Roatan with more fish and healthier reefs. Cozumel offers more dramatic diving and more options for the non-diver.

I was very impressed with St. Croix. It has easy diving (shore or boat), wall diving (shore or boat) and one of the best night dives I've done at Frederikstead Pier. Beaches are similar to St. John, but not as clean. Christianstead offers nightly entertainment and good restaurants along the boardwalk. The town has a lot of old architecture dating back to 1680. The hotels are inexpensive and if you want to go condo, you have a lot of choices. There are 2 Super K-Marts so you can buy groceries and supplies a lot cheaper than on many islands. The tap water is safe to drink. The culture is varied with many Americans as well as Europeans and native Crucians. I met several Dutch expats there. During our visit there was a street festival with Moko Jumbie Dancers: http://www.st-croix.net/fun/mokojumbies/index.html Folks were grilling outside and selling dollar hamburgers. I think St. Croix is the best kept secret diving destination.
