Received response from Manta via e-mail. Heavy Spring Break business = hectic.

Nice response, answered all my questions. I am leaning towards booking several days with them inlcuding wreck, cenotes, local, and night dives.

I am already getting excited! Will post trip report in July.

Jim

Hi!!! Can I have that e mail also forwarded to my adress? I would appreciate it very much. Jesse26Vero@wmconnect.com

My questions:

1. My wife will not accompany me on all dives. Would the DM be my dive buddy or would you try to pair me up with another diver?

2. Why are the wreck dives considered advanced dives on your website? Is it because of the penetration of the wreck or the depth?

3. Please describe the penetration of the wreck. I am conservative in my diving and like to stay within my training (I will be Advanced Open Water certified by July but not Wreck specialty).

4. The prices on your website do not seem to segregate rental of gear. I have my own BC, REG, Dive Computer, etc. Would you give me a lower price for not needing to rent equipment?

5. Are the dives restricted to the group or can you surface in buddy pairs (e.g. more bottom time with computer and differences of air consumption)?

6. Which cenotes specifically are included in the cavern dive?

7. Please provide more info concerning the night dive. I did not find much about the dive profile on the webpage.

8. How much in advance do I need to reserve? Difference in prices for booking early vs. waiting till we get there?

9. Please describe cancellation policies. I have read that PAYPAL better than CCard because of delays if refund needed.

10. What kind of tanks do you use?

I would likely be interested in the following for me:

2 tank cenotes
2 tank wreck
2 tank local
1 tank night

my wife would probably do:

2 tank cenotes
2 tank local

Jim, we are a small family owned and operated PADI 5 star
Gold Palm Resort that has been in Cancun for over 12
years. We have been in the same location located on
the ocean side. As a matter of fact, we are one of the
only dive shops in Cancun located on the ocean side
eliminating boat travel time to each of the dive sites..

Jim, we can certainly accommodate you and your wife.
Let me address some of your questions.

1. Yes the dive master will be your buddy on the dives
that your wife is not diving.

2. Actually, on the website is does state that you have
to be Advanced cert., however, you do take Open
water divers as well. We are really just looking for
divers who have had more than just a few dives under
their belts. To answer your question, it is not because
of the penetration, the wreck yields some VERY strong
current descending and ascending, and we do not use
a line.

3. The wrecks were sunk about 5-6 years ago. They
are Navy MindSweepers and are about 170ft. long. You
are able to dive entirely inside the whole ship. (of course
within your limits)

4. Yes, the prices on the site do include equipment.
We give a $ 5.00 per day discount for your own equipment.

5. No, the dives are NOT restricted to allowed bottom
time, we let our divers stay down as long as their
air consumption lasts, and within standards.

6. We dive about 18 different sites, it really depends
on the customers wishes. Here are a few descriptions.

Manta Divers offers Cenotes trips daily to the
Cenotes. They are located about 1 hour to
1.5 hour between Akumal and Tulum area,
south of Cancun. The trip includes round
trip private transportation--hotel pick up
and drop off, two tank dives, all equipment,
and a full lunch. The price is $ 129.00 usd.

Mexico offers the BEST Cenotes/Cavern Diving
in the World. They are all freshwater dives.

The Cenotes are magnificent rooms decorated
with AMAZING stalactites and stalagmites formations.

Temperature: 25C/75Fc, year-round.
Visibility: just like air, the water is as clear as the air we see in.
Depth: 16m/45ft. average.

We visit about 18 different sites.

Here are a few examples of where we visit.

** Chac Mool (depth 42ft) Three Cenotes,
air pocket, halocline and decorations.

** Ponderosa (depth 45ft) Two Cenotes,
halocline, fossils.

** Taj-Mahal (depth 50ft) Four Cenotes
in one dive, stalagmites, fossils, and halocline.

** Dos Ojos WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS----
Two Cenotes, air pockets, fossils, stalagmites,
and beautiful stalactites.

We do offer some more ADVANCED sites.

7. The night dives are some of the best dives here.
Cancun has an abundance of aquatic life, and
our night dives are when some of the best come
out. We generally depart the marina around 5:30 to
6:30 p.m. depending on time of the year it is (when
it gets dusk) we offer either a 1 or 2 tank dive. We
go to shallow reefs, we have about 5-6 to chose from.
We do provide lights.

8. Now, for pricing, we do offer a 10% discount
if you pay online, as opposed to waiting until you
get here.

9. If you cancel within 24 hours, or you are sick,
we are reasonable for refunds.
Regarding the payment, not necessarily, if you book online, you can
get a refund within 24 hours. What you are referring
to is if you pay down here in Mexico on a credit card
machine, yes, it does take longer to get your refund.
PayPal you can get a refund immediately as well.

10. We use 80 cubic feet aluminum.

Thanks THETASH!!!! I appreciate you posting the e mail. Those were really good questions indeed. I think everyone well benefit from them. I also liked the package that you selected. So when are you going/? I will be there May 29-Jun 15. Thanks for the response.

I don't know if anyone knows, but I have never been to Cancun and I am asking myself if you can bargain down prices from dive ops just like anything else in Mexico. Does anybody know? Do Dive Shops bargain down when you go in person in Cancun?

BomberoDiver:

I don't know. Some probably do, but I am willing to pay a fair price for good service, safety, and good experience. If businesses that provide above cannot make reasonable profit, divers will be stuck with fly by nights or cattle boat behemoths only. Same goes for LDS vs. internet.

I am going to book with Manta for this summer online and get the 10% discount. Also, I want to have a preplanned intinerary.

Have fun and tell us how your trip goes. Glad I could help.

Regards,
Jim

DISCOUNTS ON DIVING
In general with a good dive shop here in the Yucatan you will not be able to bargain unless you are a group of 6 or more buying a package. Our margins are small and our money goes into servicing our clients, gear and paying our loyal crews. It is not a bazaar! Some people try and beat you down like you are buying a pair of sunglasses! Small high quality dive shops like Manta and us at Dive Puerto Morelos survive on level of service and return customers. We also need to keep our crew happy and they are happiest when our divers are happy. Big companies have hotel deals and cattle boats and it really doesn't matter if you don't come back again! Your choice.
PRIVACY
Did you seek Manta's permission to publish their private response to you? I know it was with best intentions.
AQUAWORLD
Of course Aquaworld gives you a quick response - they have a whole department with just sales and marketing people that sit on the phones and computers following up leads.

No, the information I posted was totally generic. They likely get these same set of questions from hundreds of divers judging from the inquiries on this board. There is nothing specific to me in terms of special deals or perks. In fact, it reads like a brochure. I likely would have posted the exact same facts in the form of a trip report after my trip except for the fact that the previous poster asked for the information.

I am sorry if I caused offense, but as a dive operator, would you really object to free, generic, positive advertising? Our LDS wants as much free pub as they can get!

Regards,
Jim

I am sure you caused no offence - I was interested- it also gave me food for thought as to how we would react, and of course you are correct it was generic. One of the great sides to this business is that the vast majority of divers are incredibly polite, it really makes the days easier. thanks

Husband dove with ScubaCancun last summer, they make an excellent video- and Manchones reef was awesome.
