Soggy, check out Manchones Reef between Cancun and Isla Mujeres. Easy dive, shallow allows more bottom time to see the pretty fish.

Just east of Manchones the reef gets a bit deeper and still has lots of fishies. It's within sight of Manchones. Then just on the eastern edge of the deeper reef they sank a minesweeper. I haven't been on it for a couple of years but I would expect it's starting to draw some wild life by now. It's a fun dive. Very easy to penetrate because of the way it was prepped. Max depth is something like 75'. That's about the deepest dive you'll do at Cancun btw.

FolsomDiver,
Blue Peace is no longer in business. Daniel sold up a while ago - have you considered Solo Buceo?

http://www.solobuceo.com/copy/default1.htm - I've not used them myself but they have a good reputation. I have used ScubaCancun and they are a professional outfit.

Best wishes

I heard nothing but good about Solo Buceo. Sounds like there is a lot of nice dive ops...it's hard to choose. I'll probably try 2 or 3 different ops, leaning towards Manta first.
Can't wait to get down there!

Looks like we'll be staying at one of the Royal Resorts or the Omni Cancun. Any comments on these?

Royal Resorts are excellent. Great restaurants w/very reasonable prices, super clean rooms and grounds, on site grocery stores w/cold beer. I've been staying there for 8 years and have nothing to complain about.

The Royal Mayan is the oldest of the three that are together (There's a fairly new resort, the Royal Sands, a mile or so north of the other three) but we prefer the Mayan. Partly because of the Palapa restaurant by the pool. It's open air and serves from first thing in the morning till 9 at night. The chicken salad sandwiches are excellent. The fajitas are also great for dinner. Neither appear on the menu most of the time but are always available.

You can kid around with the staff too. Most of the service staff are Mayans and they're almost without exception very friendly. Often they'll take a moment to teach you the Spanish for whatever you're buying or ordering.

The onsite dive op is Aquaworld. If you just want fun reef dives, don't be afraid to use them. They have large stable boats, but I've seldom seen one really crowded. If you need a bit of a tuneup, ask if you can use their tanks in the pool for a few minutes, or they'll even do a full refresher at a good price.

PM me if you have any questions and don't want to post 'em here. I heartily recommend the Royals.

I will be traveling to Cancun May 29 for 16 days. I have never been there and I plan to dive. I have read a lot of reviews and like most new travelers there, have been anxious to get there. I have read some what on Solo Buceo. What do you guys think of this op? If you are familiar with them, I would appreciate what you recommend with them, packages or prices you paid. If you don't recom PLEASE do tell me why.

Solo Buceo is a small family operation. They only have a few employees. I have written to them on several occasions and on each they recommended I contact other area dive shops. They specialize in DSD and OW courses focusing on NEW divers. They do have some "set" tours and classes. Unfortunately I wanted a little more than what they offered. From what I hear, although there services are limited, what they do, they do well. I am sure they want my business but not at the cost of my being unhappy because they were unable to fulfill what I wanted. So from a professional standpoint, they have always responed to emails quickly and professionally and realize if someone's requests were outside the scope of their services and advise you of the same. I respect them for that. But unfortunately I have been using other dive ops to fill my needs.

Hello,

Has anyone communicated with Manta Divers via e-mail? I requested some info on Saturday and have not received any response. Everyone says Aquaworld is not that great, but they at least answer your questions very quickly via e-mail. I have read that Cozumel has ISP issues. Same in Cancun?

I am thinking about sending the same questions to ScubaCancun if I get no response although Manta was my first choice from reading this board.

Actually, I talked with Manta befiore my last trip (5 months ago) and they were very responsive. They're a good shop, just a little pricey.

I'm not willing to spend for International call when e-mail should be just as fast and free.

Any suggestions in Cancun besides Manta, ScubaCancun, and Solo Buceo?

I have my own gear and dive computer and am looking for flexible operation. Seems like a lot of these types in Cozumel according to board (e.g. blue xt, liquid blue, aldora, etc.) but few in Cancun. Sure wish I was staying in Cozumel, but place is free in Cancun.

Regards,
Jim

Received response from Manta via e-mail. Heavy Spring Break business = hectic.

Nice response, answered all my questions. I am leaning towards booking several days with them inlcuding wreck, cenotes, local, and night dives.

I am already getting excited! Will post trip report in July.
