I guess it depends on the light. Most of the smaller retractors don't have enought tension to hold heavier lights. If you are set on using something to prevent your light from dropping, you could also try one of these, that a lot of people use for their cameras. Or, you could just tie a bolt snap to the end of the light and clip it off on a D ring.

Thanks, that looks a lot stronger than the retractor and I won't have to worry about it dangling when getting in/off the boat.
