Not looking for sympathy, just reminiscing....

We did the normal pre vacation dive trip equipment checkout this afternoon. Dive buddy's gear was fine.
I got a no go on my aladin. Went to check the battery level and it went into "beep mode". Not a big deal since I have a backup computer @ %94. I am annoyed that I cannot remember how much battery this one claimed last dive trip.

Worst issue was finding somewhere to park the computer so that I could not hear the beeping.

I have a few spare batteries and lots of oil and paper towels.

Also have a few eBay rejects in a pile so I think I will make this into a project evening.

Yeah, pretty much forced into it. Speaking of reminiscing: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/co...396-uwatec-smart-pro-battery.html#post5181418

I have two SmartPro's, very nice NDL hockey pucks, love 'em. Send mine in anytime it needs a battery, gets fixed. The other one was opened by the kid just because he wanted to see what was inside. End of story from ScubaPro's standpoint. All I need is reset information. The ladies and gentlemen at ScubaPro will not provide this information. Fine. Never buy another.

How hard would it be to take the "compromised" DC back, charge me for a fix, and get me back on the program? -not going to happen, tried hard.

Bought four DC's since. This is the SP forum, so no details as to the manufacturers...

It was messy. But popped 3 batteries into a sport, pro and a console mount pro ultra. Also drained and refilled a "intermittent" pro ultra that the seller gave up on. Seems it was half full of air. Battery was at %94 and case and strap in good shape. Cheap at $50.

The pair of pro ultras finally give me Nitrox capable computers. Maybe I should get certified?

Bad news. My dive buddy just saw the new pile of computers. Unfortunately she knows where the other pile is. And she can count.

Seems like I may have to SELL something on eBay.

Soon.

Mineral or Silicone?
:shocked2:
No idea. Mineral oil is readily available in drug stores here but very expensive. Getting enough to fill the computer is easy. Getting enough to be able to dunk it in a pail so that there are no air bubbles as you seal it up is harder.

I went to an industrial specialty oil supplier, told him what I was trying to do, showed him the dive computer and he gave me several gallons of "transformer oil" if I would buy pizza for his crew.

I now have a pail of oil that I can fully submerge and work with the computer under oil while putting it back together.

This is the SCUBAPRO forum I can hear rounds being chambered... :shocked2:
To clarify - I meant Nitrox certified.

Have been very slow on this one as we have not needed it yet. We stay down long, but do not go deep.

... I meant Nitrox certified.

:coolingoff: Ah. I thought you meant DC repair. :D

Uwatec was a great company, [IMHO] SP is a humorless machine that makes superior dive gear and exists to convert dive shop owners. [/IMHO] Valid business model, kinda low on end-user support though...

Maybe there is hope for this sport...

I strongly disagree with this sentiment. Frankly, it's a cheap shot at Scubapro which is totally unwarranted. I owned a dive shop for 7 years and was a Scubapro dealer. Their warranty service was unsurpassed by any other vendor I represented. It is so good, in fact, that there are lots of people who take advantage of it and truly abuse the system. SP is aware of this, but they tolerate it as long as it doesn't become too extreme. For the "normal" consumer, he can be assured that SP will honor the warranty--which is extremely generous--with virtually no questions asked. This applies to Uwatec gear as well as SP gear.

Just one concrete example of end users abusing ScubaPro, Please... :rofl3:

This is Definitely not a cheap shot. I watched my first tech shop agonize under the business model. SP is just like Hallmark Cards. Lose all the non-professional crap. You are either true to the force or you are a problem. Correct me online...

BTW, I dive MK17's and G250(V)'s exclusively only because I consider them to be better than anything else I can get for the price. I'm a regular customer, just not brand loyal.

*Crickets*

No more Beepin. I had to re-oil one of the units since it had a small air bubble. More mess.

Popped them all into the chamber for a ride down to 192 feet along with another "gold" unit. They all read within 1 ft of each other for a 116 minute dive. So we are good to go.

The Aladin Pro was my second dive computer. Loved it... until the battery failed with 38% "remaining battery life" displayed. However, the several Uwatec computers I've purchased since with user replaceable batteries have all been great.
