Avoid trips organized by a "buddy" profiting from "organizing" the trip, my two cents. When my buddies and I get a group discount we spread it evenly among all in the group. I mean seriously, how difficult is it to organize a dive trip?
 
I never had ANY contact for the operator before the dive.

Then perhaps the event planner should pay for the dive if they failed to properly notify the charter they'd be one short.

That would be proper business, where there is profit, there is generally risk and accountability.
 
Man sounds like you need better friends...

Onespeed, I agree with you 1000%! I have put lots of dives together and spread the discount around ALL the divers.
I have NEVER profited from my dive buddies.
