So I saw no advantages listed for bungees. You state that the dumping is the same, and you're just as streamlined. Would it be fair to say that you know of no advantage to having bungees?
No, that would not be fair.
The Rec wing's bungee does what it's there to do - helps prevent the "taco" effect. I don't use that wing for singles, but I do for side mount, and the bungee improves (reduces) the wing's vertical profile. To me that is an advantage.

Roakey,

Your point is simple. You don't like banded wings (we get that point), and you think they cause problems, an assertion for which you have no scientific justification.
Let's see your "Scientific justification" for wrapping a perfectly good wing in elastic cord.

Let's see your "Scientific justification" for wrapping a perfectly good wing in elastic cord.

We see of course that you too, Mr. Pants, (odd name that, by the way), have an irrational and deep-seated fear of the killer BWOD.

You have missed my point, however, in that I said that neither side has "scientific justification".

There exists NO study to prove that the contentions made by yourself and your brethren, such as Roakey, that wide-spread problems DO exist with banded wings are in any way true. Thus it is that what you and he are espousing is mere conjecture and un-supported allegation.

If there exists such a study, I CHALLENGE EITHER YOU OR HIM TO PRODUCE IT NOW, or forever be relegated to the ranks of those who absolutely "know' that certain physical facts exist, but cannot in any way demonstrate that they are so.

Another point that you and he are missing is that the "supporters" of banded wings are alleging nothing about un-banded wings. So any argument, if such there is, is coming from your camp.

Lacking any solid, scientific reports on the subject neither side has justification, per se, so it then boils down to preference.

They have the right to choose the mighty BWOD, just as you have the right to your choice.

You also have the right to spew un-founded allegations about the imagined dangers of banded wings, but in the absence of proof, such allegations are merely pathetic and laughable.

I take personal exception to your claim that I have a "fear" of anything, much less an "irrational" one. I have taken from your numerous posts that you have something against DIR, which is fine by me, but your direct insult of me is completely uncalled for and I am personally offended by this.

I'm not asking for a scientific justification, all I'm asking for is what does any user think banded wings do better than unbanded wings?

I've repeated this question now about four times and have yet to see any response!

Roak

I've asked this question a couple of times in this thread as well.

WHAT BENEFITS DO BUNGEE WINGS HAVE??!?!?!!?

In the sales brochure for these things, what are the selling points? I'm not interesting in buying them simply because there are no scientific studies showing they won't kill me, I'd like to actually see some benefit. "Buy it because it won't kill you" just isn't a great tag line.

So far, it seems like the main selling point is that if you've got a wing that is way too big (doubles wing for a singles tank, 120# wing, etc) that the bungees help control all that excess wing material. That problem seems better solved by going to a smaller wing.

EDIT: and there's rick's use for sidemounting... any more?

But with that same logic, one can ask what advantages do un-bungeed wings have? (and I do not want to hear all the accusations relating to death, air squeeze, punctures, entaglement and creating problems that do not exist - obviously the designers of the product saw a need and created the solution for it)

Here are a few points (snippets) that were posted waaay back (on page 1 by xiSkiGuy)
-The bungees minimize the effects of massive airshifts when compared to non bungeed wings
-The bungees minimize the “taco” effect
-any loss of streamlining by the “uneven” surface of bungees is compensated by the fact the excess wing isn’t flapping around

all examples of using gear to compensate for gear.

Why not just buy the right size wing in the first place?

Why Mr. Pants, no one said anything about you personally, and this is the first time that you have said that you are DIR, so I would have had no way of knowing that.

You may be personally offended, but my comments were meant in GENERAL in this whole discussion, not to you personally, or anyone else.

I have been talking about the lack of logic in your attack on banded wings, not about you. I don't know you from Adam, and have no wish to offend you personally, whatever else you might think!

From an design standpoint, bungeed wings appear to be non-bungee wings with the bungees added. To me that makes the non-bungee wings simpler and therefore more desirable by default. To go with the bungees, I want to know that the bungees solve actual underwater problems with the non-bungee wings (that aren't skills issues, or issues with poor selection of equipment). There may be no benefits and no costs either way, but I like to apply "simpler is better".

An somewhere around page 3 or so, I followed up to this. Just like jeff pointed out, these are issues largely due to mis-sizing of wings. And they're problems that I don't actually observe with my non-bungee wing.
