We are still in Bali. To make a long story short, the Amed/Tularamen is the best bet as there are a variety of easily reached dive sites from there. Our average cost was $52 per two tank dive with Euro Dive and the service was great. Lots of shore diving and boat diving is likely nothing like you have ever done before as yhou go frm an outrigger canoe and put gear on in the water. The Liberty is lovely and sereral other nice walls are available. We saw giant bump head parrot fish at one. Some dives were 70 minutes and not shallow either. (No dive on the trip was less than 61 minutes.)

Permuteran/Menjangen was nice, but very remote. I recommend it only if you have a lot of time. There are few hotels but somehow we managed to get a room without a reservation. We paid $60 per 2 tank dive with a so-so dive shop that had compact 80's mixed in with standard 80's. A compact 80 looks just like a regular tank but is one kilo more negative in the water and holds about 8% less gas at the same pressure. Less gas means nothing to me, but my weights were off and I thought I had forgotten how to dive until I realized what was happening. The DM should have pointed it out, but he was oblivious. Dives here are limited to a small area on one wall. This is because the dive shops don't own the boats and they have snorkelers on board as well. Very nice though, and we saw sharks on one dive.

Nusa Penita has nice diving, but it is a rough 45 minute boat ride from Sanur. Average price for 2 tanks is $100. Because the Sunfish were showing up everyone ws going to Crystal Bay and there were many divers. Water was a nice 78f and very little current. If you want to go to Manta Point you need to call around. Coral was some of the nicest I have seen, but few of the colorful fans.

Internet service here stinks. This is the first time I could reach Scubaboard in days.

More later,

Good to hear from you. M and I have been looking for you to post. Send pics when you can - see you next dive, stay neutral

Thanks so much for your trip report! We leave in less than three weeks, and I'm so excited.

I will keep an eye out for the compact 80's, so I don't get stuck with one.

Leadweight....Thanks for the report....I am going in mid Sept and staying at the Bayou Cottages in Amed and diving with White Sand Divers. Did you dive with them? They do not have a web site nor can I find any info on them.....any info is appreciated....thanks

Travelnsj-

We only used Euro Dive in that area.

Just to clarify, we did see a Mula at Crystal Bay. They come up to be cleaned.

There are very few ATM's on the North coast of Bali. There is no ATM within an hour drive of Amed. Stock up on Rupia on the trip up from the airport. Your driver will know where to stop. At most ATM's the most you can get at one time is R 1,000,000, about $108 at present rates. Bad if your bank charges you $5 for each foreign transaction. If you have a no fee ATM card, it is the best way to get Rupia.
Just returned home today.

If you have never been to Asia, or your exposure has been limited to places like Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong, you are in for severe culture shock. Indonesia is in a condition best described as organized chaos. Its relatively peaceful on the North coast, decent around Sanur, but totally nuts in Ubud, Kuta and Legion. Actually, Sanur was my favorite place topside and my only regret is that I did not dive more from there.

Wine lovers take note, there is a severe shortage of imported wines at this time. The stuff made in Bali is nasty. Beer is cheap and so is food, except for a few restaurants. Blue Ocean in Legion (on the beach near the Jayakarta hotel) was the most outstanding restaurant of the 3 weeks. We ate there 4 times.

Stop by Euro Dive and say hi to Vicki for me.

Thanks Ron for the heads up....I was in Bali last year for about 5 days and then went to one of the most modern countries in the World...East Timor...LOL....it was pretty rough around the edges...but great diving.

Good tip about the wine. I think I'll pack up a few bottles in bubble wrap to bring with me. I hear the beer's great, but I can't drink only beer for three weeks!

Live_in_Sin:
Good luck in smuggle them in! think you are allowed to bring only 1 bottle.
Yikes! Really? I've never heard of that! Well, it's a good thing I mentioned it...I'm going to go look that up and see what I can find out. Thanks for the heads up!

Things are a bit shaky in East Timor right now.

My next trip to Indonesia will most likely include a live aboard trip to Komodo. However, I have my eyes on both Truk and the Philippine Islands, ATM. Its a big ocean out there.

First thing the Mermaid did on the plane out was to order a glass of Chardonnay.
