Hi All,

I was just curious on the backplate pads offered by various makers (ie Halycon, OMS, Hollis, etc) that rely on the stowage of liftbags, smbs, etc for the "padding". In the event you needed to deploy an smb or liftbag - would you need to take your rig off to access those items?

Thanks,

Bob

I would because my shoulder flexibility is pretty limited. Others have no trouble at all.

No, you don't. The item (lift bag, SMB, whateva) is folded up and shoved in the pocket from the bottom, then clipped off to your butt d-ring. To deploy, simply unclip and give it a tug.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Ok, that does sound pretty squeezy peasy....thanks!

I just got a Dive rite comfort pad. My smb falls down when I dry carry my gear although it tends to stay inside when it's already monted on my back. I'm planning to paste a small velcro patch to keep it from falling.

That is a pad, not a pocket Nor as as far as I know is the HOG pad. The Halcyon and Oxycheq are pockets with elastic closures.

Silly IMO to pad a plate or backpack. Never saw the sense as the weight is distributed across the back via the plate, like when Gallagher lays on a bed of nails. the pad just adds buoyancy which will need ballast to compensate.

The pad didn't add any bouyancy as the foam is open cell. the SS backplate is all I need. It has a compartment where an SMB can be stowed inside. There are no elastic enclosures so I glued a small velcro patch to keep it closed . It is attached to the backplate via the shoulder harness and lower backplate bolt.I do feel a slight difference in comfort when I don it especially on long walks on rocky shores.

The deluxe halcyon pad is in fact a pad AND a stowage area. It has comfortable foam that indeed makes it quite pleasant with or without a lift bag or SMB stowed.. I have not noticed it to add much if any buoyancy, but along with the shoulder pads, i have noticed a tremendous increase in comfort both diving with a drysuit and lots of undergarments, or a 3mm suit, or just a swimsuit and X shorts ;)
