My HOG aluminum plate has the same “problem”.
 
There is also the methode the SP uses on the S Tek pro harness for those not afraid to break away from a one piece harness.

Or… one could just buy a piece of gear that’s properly designed. Why buy something that’s off and try and fix it?

You got it use it as opposed to throwing money at it.
 
The DGX AL plates I have are all like that. It's fine for single tank don't worry about it and for doubles just push the strap up, sorta annoying but doesn't really matter.
