We're planning a trip to either Kauai or Oahu the second week of May. Based on what you've seen previous years, do you expect things will have cleared up by early May or later in the month?

Thanks,

D

I hope these updates help. Today we already had 30-40ft vis all day long here. Not anywhere near normal Kauai vis (yet) but we SEEM to be on an upswing. Whitetip Reef Sharks at Turtle bluffs, Turtles galore at Sheraton Caverns.... best dives in over two weeks. Although I work as a DM here - I would offer my honest heartfelt belief that anyone concerned about long term impact can rest easy. The ocean turns itself around so quickly. We'll be back to incredible conditions quickly.

These conditions will be long gone very very soon. Diving here for 7 years and over 3000 dives I can say that the ocean is hard to predict (understatement). That being said, I have no reason to think that things wont be back to normal long before your trip. That is based on my experience here in that limited amount of time.

No rain tonight and I dive in the am. Whales were singing today...

Give us the chance to share amazing kauai diving with you... and "I promise" you will be MORE THAN AMAZED!!!

Wow! I'd hate to be the one having to clean up that hotel! What a mess! Sorry to see that. I've heard a lot about the damage from the rain over there. Best of luck with the repairs.

I just had one of my customers e-mail me asking about Kauai. She and her husband are there now and are looking to dive. Who should I send her to? What's the chance of her making an Intro Dive early this week? (they've dove a few times but still aren't certified.) We got some heavy rain here on Maui last night but today is starting out pretty nice. How's it looking over there?

Thanks!

Aloha Doug,
You get some great feedback posts on here. That's awesome. I'll be sure to mention you when divers inquire about Maui. Intro's on the south shore right now should be avoided. Anyone offering them is just taking there money. Koloa Landing is the number one spot for us and it wont recover for a least a couple weeks. The other spot is Tunnels beach on the north shore. All the companies are starting to dive there as of last week. It's a good spot for certs but not alot of marine life for intros as the highlight is the lava tubes - and turtles that hang out a little deeper there usually. If they still really want to go I suggest Sacred Seas Scuba. There specialty is shore diving and Julie Kelly is truely great with new divers. We got heavy rain last night as well and it continues today. Our boats even cancelled today and we are taking the day to evaluate conditions in the am. Bet K-mart is making a mint in umbrella sales huh?

Aquamankauai,

We are scheduled to arrive in Kauai 4/7 through 4/14. Any thoughts how the diving will be by then. We have reservations on for the Niihau dive on the 9th with Fathom Five. We are really looking forward to the diving but if it doesn't happen we won't let it ruin our trip. What should we expect?

Thanks for any info.

Aloha,

Sorry I overlooked this post. Diving has improved no question. Four days ago we opened diving on the North Shore at Tunnels. 2 days ago I dove 4 different dive sites off of the boat. 3 of the sites had between 40-80ft vis. We are still getting rain and looking for optimal dive conditions each day - but we are looking less (having to do less searching). The rain just isnt being chased away despite my best efforts! I'm always letting my optimism get in the way of reality - but in this case I do think diving will start to improve more and more. Niihau is alway a little uncertain during early may with or without rain - but we will do our best to get interested divers out to see that amazing place. Consider doing at least one day on the south side of Kauai (diving). Our Turtle dives are awesome. Sheraton Caverns has re-opened to diving and the turtles are back in full force. Our resident frogfish even made it through the storm and murky water! We'll be happy (in fact we insist) to help with any dive or non-dive related plans. I wish I could promise great conditions. I can only say that it appears to be on an upswing. What I can promise is that you'll love diving with us and be taken better care of than you would believe in advance. I hope I personally get the chance to take you diving! Afterall, it is the coolest thing on the planet!

Let me know what else I can do to make your Kauai visit great!
