OK!! My name is . . . (Whispers in your ear)

Rhone Man:

I can understand not wanting to do more difficult dives under adverse conditions with an instabuddy; if you've on Bonaire, and you're read about diving the east coast, maybe the Cai site, and you're going to try it without benefit of a guide, then yes, a seasoned buddy pair who know each other well can be a safety asset.

But a typical 45-50 minute professionally guided Caribbean vacation dive to modest depth in tropical aquarium-like conditions? Some of these divers are quite seasoned.

Richard.

Not disagreeing with you. I think my point was (in response to your question) if a "buddy monogamy" trend does exist in diving, it is probably an adjunct to a system which promotes and stresses the importance of buddy pairing.

My wife and I dive together almost all of the time as buddies. We prefer that type of diving. We learned together and were certified at the same time. Occasionally we will have a single friend join us as a threesome. We will also dive with other people if we need to split up to help a less skilled diver. We have an agreement that if one of us is sick or injured, the other one is still free to dive with someone else. We winter over in Bonaire where there are a lot of good divers in our condo area. consequently, there is a lot of opportunity to dive with a lot of different good divers.

So, I guess I would say that we are largely monogamous divers with times of non-monogamy .

I don't dive with a buddy. However my roommate and I are 'same cave/ocean' buddies. We start the dive together and she meets up with me at deco. Think of it as two solo divers diving in the same cave. We prep for the dives, plan and do surface intervals together.

We are severe introverts. This system of diving works well for us.

If one of us is not available (this rarely happens) - the other just goes diving and does everything solo. We average 15-20 dives a week.

I'm somewhat monogamous, although I'll admit to the occasional 3 way dive.

So jealous of the 15-20 dives a week. If I manage to dive at all in a week, I am over the moon.

For those that say they are strictly monogamous - I have a question. Do you think your partner or you could benefit from diving with another partner?

Are you always leading or following your monogamous partner? Could you or your partner learn a new approach or could either of you step out of your comfort zone with a different partner? I am not suggesting permanently - I am curious if you or your partner are being led on a "guided tour" without realizing it... And might learn or enjoy a different partner occasionally or is this just heresy? :-)

I push my son to dive with others - I know I do most if not all the planning, navigation and I want him to get better. So my thought is - for him to grow he needs to experience different divers and partners to learn his strengths. Of course I am still in the area but I am not paired up with him so he can learn and gauge his own progress without me lending a hand.

I adore diving with my husband. He's my favourite dive buddy, and every minute we spend in the water together is very precious. However, he has a great deal more experience than I do, so I encourage him to make dives that I cannot yet do: namely, very long cave dives or mixed gas cave dives (he has a CCR and I've just bought mine but have yet to begin class). He loves making those dives, and I also think it's very important for him to dive with buddies who are even stronger and more experienced than he is, instead of with me all the time. Fortunately, I have a couple friends who are also amazing buddies that make OC cave dives with me while my husband is doing his thing, and occasionally, we will also all dive together.

I'm an international swinger and sometimes will join in with a more experienced couple. Oh la la!

I love to travel and very rarely find someone who is willing and able to travel as often as I do. I can't even imagine finding someone who would not only travel, but dive as well? That's the holy grail.
