I've got a Aqualung Titan LX/enviromental kit back-up reg set, which I often bring on dive trips, and have loaned to my travel companion/buddy in a pinch...but, strangely enough, I've never actually used the reg myself ! I'm wondering to what maximum depths this reg can easily/comfortably go...relative to say, some of my primary reg sets (ie. Atomic M1 / Apeks XTX200) ?

Karl

It can go any place you can. It has been able to deliver the US navy's maximum RMV of 75 at 198 FSW and maintain an ease of effort of 1 j/l. As the depths increase the effort and RMV it could handle began to drop off.

At 198 feet the M1 is able to handle up to RMV 81.1 and the ATX200 was 79.1 in comparison. The higher the number the more it can handle or deliver so to speak.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Hallmac! One reason I've not dove it is that I keep it configured in a minimalistic fashion (ie, only 1 BCD hose, whereas I usually dive with a dual wing) so that I can pass it off to another diver with no field mods needed to 'save a dive'. I'm surprised the 'spendy' regs really don't appear to have better performance though.....unless it is only beyond 200' the differences become more obvious.

....anyone out there have any 'real-world' DEEP diving experience with the Titan LX, above and beyond the pure test specs ?

The deepest I've had mine was to 130, and it performed beautifully.

Scubafanatic, why don't you try the tech diver room. I'm sure some of those guys have gone to 500 fsw or more. Look for the chaps with DIR tatooed on their biceps and a footprint on their azz.

Thank you for the response, TSandM ! I'm considering using my Titan LX myself, for those situations where I'm forced to travel 'lite'....and for places like Bonaire, where there's lot's of tank swapping/gear schlepping and I want to simplify gear changes....it's not as big a deal on a liveaboard where one assembles one's gear once per week.

pescador775......my main interest was to see if this fairly budget oriented reg ran out of steam in the 100' - 150' or so range.....or if, for example, one was caught in a downdraft, and pushed down a bit beyond a planned 130' max recreational limit, would this reg have the extra performance for it not to be an issue.

That is because the design is tried and true. The Titan 1st stage is a Conshelf in a prettier dress. Everything is the same. Many tech dives have been made with that design. The second stage is the difference. It has the same design as the Legend and the Apex TX series second stages. Materials and spring pressures are the only difference.

Karl I have taken it to 165ffw several times. No complaints with performance. If it was the only regulator available I would never hesitate in taking it deep. For the price and what it can do I still have to say it is one of the best bargains in regulators I have ever used.

I have two Apex TX 100's on doubles, two Legends on doubles, and two conshelf 21's on doubles. I have three Titan LX's for the kids, and seven Micras with SEA's. Then there are the regulators just lying around wondering if they will get used sometime. Man I need to get a better hobby or a wife to spend the money on. Is there a Scuba AA program? :rofl3:

The truth is, I might notice a difference when switching from one reg to the next but all of them have always breathed just fine on whatever dive I have made. The only regulator I have ever breathed on that I could really tell a difference is the Atomic. That dang thing is smooth. I hate to say that, because, I absolutely hate the way they environmentally seal the thing. What a pain in the ass to clean.

Take it down once and you will be pleased.

Hi Hallmac,
Thanks for your additional real-world observations...... 165' is a pretty decent performance test for my needs. That test depth is probably the outer edge of any recreational dive I'd ever do, especially on the typical AL80....I likely wouldn't venture much below that unless I were to encounter a downdraft or assist another diver in need in an emergency.
I know what you mean about too many regs....I've got the Titan, 2 Apeks / 7 Jetstreams ( 4 sets rigged for doubles ) , a Mares Ruby, a Mares MR16 Voltrex, plus a few more Mares in boxes in storage. :D
Yeah, I agree the enviro kit on my M1 isn't very 'elegant' .....the enviro kit on my Titan and Apeks XTX 200's is a much better design...but the M1 is certainly an excellect reg!
