Thanks for all the excellent technical clarifications (I'm still a little vague on what to buy for a back-up reg--an LDS told me I'd need an octopus that comes with a back-up reg; and this whole din/yoke issue is not settled in my mind, but on about that later.)

Regarding buying at an LDS vs online, the LDS prices I'm getting on an Apeks 200 come in around $650. The online prices are closer to $399! What's up with that? Would you pay that difference? If so, why?

I purchased my ATX200 from my LDS for $525.00, you can buy them all day long on line for $399.00. The difference is that Apex will not provide the free parts for life if purchased on line. For me it was worth paying the extra $125.00. It may take a couple years to realize the savings, besides, if I have a problem I'd rather be able to take care of it locally. Apeks are great regs, I also own a TX100.

Does anyone understand the relationship between Aqualung and Apeks? I've seen some very good reviews fot the Aqualung regs, which apparently incorporate and possibly even improve upon Apeks technology. Apeks is their partner to some capacity, which I don't fully understand Would you consider an Aqualung regulator to be the equal to Apeks? I believe they are a little cheaper.

Parts?
Reliablility?
Will the Agualung/Apeks relationship go the way of the Zeagle Apeks relationship?

As always, your opinions and comments are greatly appreciated!

Yes, being the store manager of a dive shop that sells both, I understand the relationship very well...

Aqualung is the US distributor for Apeks. Air Liquide, a European company, owns both Aqualung and Apeks.

The Legend series of AQ regs has some parts that are manufactured by Apeks. The legend series are very comparable to the Apeks 50, and 200...

ALL the parts are available thru any authorized dealer of Aqualung. Reliability is very good. They are both top companies in reg manufacturing. Apeks is one of the most preferred regs for deep, technical dives. The legend series havent been out long enough for them to get that title. I dont see that happening though. The Apeks are a sweet reg...

Also, to answer your question regarding the Apeks/ AQ relationship going south, I dont think so. Seeing as they are both owned by the same company. Zeagle was just a distributor for Apeks in the USA. APeks dumped them so that they werent being relabeled as Zeagle. They wanted their brand identity back, and Seaquest took them on, and distributed them under the Apeks name. Then, SQ, and AQ merged. Now, its all AQ.

if you're diving in the tropics, like our country, the at20 will do...
the only glaring difference between the at20 and the atx50 is the environmental seal wich makes you able to bring the atx50 to freezing waters...

and as jplacson said, lowly as it is, it's more than dependable...
apeks, i think, now leads other regs since it was used by john bennett when he posted the record deepest dive at 1000ft...
he used atx100...

Just to be clear boys and girls, that little bubble on the bottom of ALL apeks first stages is the environmental seal that resists freeze up (yes even the T20 and the new AT20). This does not however illeviate all of your problems as the T20 second stage is still suceptable. The ATX40 would be the better option here.

I have the Apex Atx200 and atx 40 as an octo. As far as the breathing goes at 90 feet the atx40 breathed identical. I was only using it for a few breaths but in that time i noticed now real noticable difference. as far as price my dive shop matched leisure pro on my purchase. atx200 $400 atx 40 $115. I got the hookup!

I found an LDS that matched LP's pricing as well. I went with the Apeks 200 w/ a 50 octopus. I also bought a suunto cobra for myself and a suunto analog guage for my wife, each with compass. A recent refinance helped!

We figured that we'd go with top notch equipment for our life support.

Thank you all for your input. I'm sure the Apeks/Scubapro and LDS non LDS debate will go on for some time.

I've taken my position: Go with Apeks and find a flexible LDS. I suspect that most LDS want your business because the regulator maintenance is a nice bit of income for them. By my estimates, maintenance will overtake first cost in as little as seven yeras for even a pricey regulator like the Apeks 200.

You should buy it from your LDS , You get the Warranty and LDS support and you support your LDS, or you should buy your air fills online and direct all question to them and not your LDS.

you're right, lubold8431...
and if i'm not mistaken, it was jack costeau who helped establish the company air liquide...
and i heard the company just keeps on growing...

You should really check your facts before you post. The AT-20 first stage does NOT have an environmental seal. it is not rated for anything below 50 deg F according to european CE standards.

After reading some of your posts, have you ever even SEEN an APeks regulator???

EDITED TO ADD: Also, son, the "little bubble" you are referring to is a diaphragm, and yes, that is the environmental seal. And, on some Apeks regs, its on the TOP, not the bottom (ATX-100 first and ATX_200 First).

I don't believe you are correct on this. Also, the diaphram on my ATX 200 is on the top....not the bottom.
