Exactly, being careful is the process for venturing to where these reels may follow you.

We dumped reels in preference of spools for DSMBs 25 years ago and what now people need a fancy reel

Reels are still used by cold water divers wearing thicker gloves.

Spools are easier to use without gloves.

Does anyone know what sort of line is on the Apeks reels? Nylon? UHMWPE? Something else? I know that they did a bunch of research and testing before they chose the line for the reels.

Not sure if this link is going to work.

on amazon: search "ratcheting dive reel". This is the one I own. The ratcheting mechanism works well. 46 m of line. $23. You can replace the line with something a little lighter to 60m if you need to. That apeks reel is super cool and super smooth (I used one), but hard to justify the price.

On drift dives, especially when hunting or lobstering, a reel is the way to go. Totally agree with for deploying an SMB. ALL of the dive shops by me use a manta reel. Sounds like someone on this post with machine shop access consider making something similar. They are not all that complex, but they do function well.

I've got the Apeks reel - I just need to replace the line after a passing boat was in the wrong spot at the wrong time and hit my DSMB just as it reached the surface and so a fair bit of the line subsequently got munched by the prop. I'm just trying to find out what sort of line they use so as I can replace it with the same line - as it is really nice line.

Aussie Dyneema 1.9mm Line, 50m spool

If you call that shop, they will advise you on the weight. This stuff is super strong. These guys know their stuff. I would ask for Larry or Aaron. In fact, I am going to likely do the same thing to replace the line on my current reel which is getting a little chewed up.
