i started when I read the exact same book. I was reading it and started doing it. Although these books don't teach you a lot of skills and focus on history and things like that, there are a few places where you can pick up a few new skills that could save you later

It isn't that uncomfortable.

If your mask is under your hood it means either your hood or your mask is on backwards. Either way it's very hard to see, epecially underwater. :D

I wear my mask STRAP under my hood. More secure, better seal.

That explains why my dive light doesn't seem so bright.

I'm having a difficult time envisioning how I would successfully and comfortably manage this... between long hair and a thick hood I don't think I could pull it off... or at least, I don't think I'd want to try.

Didn't try it yet, but sure, the mask skirt goes under the hood, all the time.

About the snorkel thing, you actually use one? I didn't use the snorkel since I was 10, cool kids dive without one. ;)

Also, I got my OWD without having seen a snorkel anywhere nearby. I'll see if it's needed by any agency for the AOW when I go for the course, but as long as nobody cares around here for the OWD/AOW thingy, I'm not in a hurry to do it anyway.

what about when you are required to wear a snorkel? or can you get the keeper far enough forward?

There's no requirement to wear a snorkel. The requirement is that each instructor, assistant, and student have a snorkel. Mine stays in my hip pocket.

Put hood on, bring the top front down around your neck. Put your mask on, then bring your hood back up over your head. My wife has long hair and manages it quite easily. It's just in how you do it. :D

Not sure how you got OWD within standards without a snorkel. Most agencies require snorkels for open water training dives. (see above) PADI definitely does. Your instructor violated standards by not having a snorkel and not requiring you, as a student, to have one. Especially since 2 of the skills require snorkels - reg/snorkel exchange and 5 point descent.

Hey Evil,

I was going to ask the exact same question - I'm reading Deep Descent and came across the same passage about the woman almost getting her mask knocked off on the Doria.

But, like a good forumnater, I did a search before posting first. :)
