The mask under the hood thing is a little old school to avoid losing your mask if kicked. I don't dive with crowds.

I always wear my mask under my hood. Never thought that it might get kicked off but when I was a diver at the aquarium the nice fishies would happily rip it off the back of your head, so it just became a habit.

And it's far more comfortable for me than wearing it on the outside.

Wow, didn't expect so many responses (or to find so many people that used this method). Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to splash down tomorrow evening and I think I'll give this technique a try to see how it works for me.

Thanks all!

Dive in current strong enough if you turn your head your mask will start flapflapflapflaping against your head. It isn't all about being kicked in the face (although that's a huge part of it).

I wear a drysuit with attached latex hood.
I wear a neoprene under hood for insulation.
It leaks water if my mask strap is under the hood.
I do tuck the skirt of my mask under my hood.
This allows me to exhale a nice warm air bubble under my hood.

never thought of wearing it under my hood, but after reading this, I will surely give it a try :)

My mask leaks when I wear it over my hood. With it under my hood, it's just fine. Not sure why the difference, but it's definitely there. Maybe because I'm too lazy to change the tightness of the strap. :D So under the hood it goes.
