Upon more google, it appears nickle oxyhydroxide is the same as NiZn.

Hi Guys:

Would these batteries work?

Sanyo 14500 Protected li-ion 3.7V battery by Orbtronic

I bought a pair to use in my dive computer. Unlucky for me, the flu struck and I haven't been able to dive for several weeks.

O.
Replace 2 alkaline AAs with one of those (you'll need something conductive to fill the extra space) and you should have more stable voltage, and even a little higher than what the 2 alkalines in series provided. There are flashlights with extra pieces of tube so that you can switch among various batteries with similar diameter, but different overall length. You'd have to solve the same problem.
