Their sense of smell is hypersensitive to the scent of fish blood....they can smell it from a long way away. It probably is the dead fish.
 
Gee, imagine someone kicking on the surface dragging a stringer with a trailing blood line attracking a shark? Tigers love coming up out of nowhere just to take a look at the normal course of events in their ocean. Adding the blood trail is like turning on the blue light at K-Mart.
