I find this to be the best photo I've see for illustrating a 7' hose with necklaced backup.

It's from this site. FKD - Equipment Center

except it isn't under something on the diver's right side....

It is OK, he is a technical diver.

If you haven't bought the 5ft, I would suggest just go to 7ft once and for all. I like 7ft stuff inside waist strap a lot better than 5ft loop under arm with nothing to hold it closet o my body. I am a

As you know I got the same setup from Jim except I got a SS plate. After about 20 dives on it I'm so incredibly happy with this setup. It's exactly what I wanted and the bp/w is even more of pleasure to dive than I expected. Streamlined, easy, customizable, and comfortable.

I solo dive often so I have 2 reg configurations. But I use a 5' hose when buddy diving with a bungee reg for me. It just makes since. But the most comfortable is my Edge regs with braided hose and swivel. It's my solo rig...19cf pony backup with scuba pro 109.

Any way congrats! It only gets better the more you dive.

... I thought there was a routing difference between 5' and 7', in that the 7' makes an extra loop around the neck whereas the 5' just comes behind, but of course I've never seen it in person so idk

No hoses (should) loop around the neck (360 degrees). 5' and 7' hoses route exactly the same way behind the neck. Think of it as 'resting behind the neck', rather than 'looping around'. The extra length of the 7' hose is taken up by routing it underneath canister/knife etc on the waist-band, or even just tucked into the waist-band.

That said, I have heard of tech instructors teaching a complete encirclement of the neck with the hose. How they got to the level of technical instructor with that magnitude of incompetency astounds me...

Well you do make the shepherd's loop when cleaning up after an s-drill...

Sounds good guys, I may upgrade to a 5' for the additional air sharing freedom. Don't think the 7 will be necessary as we won't be cave diving...

Having used both a 5 ft and 7 ft hose many times, I strongly recommend that you use the 5 ft hose for OW diving as you are intending. It's much more comfortable and streamlined than tucking in the extra 2 ft. If you were diving in restrictions like caves and already had a 7 ft hose, fine, it will work with no problem in OW without a can light. But there is no reason to specifically buy one for OW diving.

I have both, I only use the 7ft in restrictions, with my doubles set up. I have had to use it in OW with a single tank and no can light a few times, and it's not nearly as convenient as the 5 ft hose. That still offers plenty of hose length for air sharing. The extra 2 ft is really only for single file air sharing through small openings.

Look closer he's got a light canister there on his waist strap. The hose is routed under it.

my bad... damn I need glasses....

as per the 5' vs. 7', select what fits you comfortably, not "I'm not doing caves"... In my case, because of my height, a 7' hose stows better than a 5' (which pulls).
