Try Australia. Hydro required EVERY year. $48 australian each. I have 7 tanks. So I spend $336 a year on test...oh and three of them are nitrox cleaned for partial pressure blending that adds 30 bucks per tank. So I spend $426 annually. Crikey that's the first time I've added it up :)
It's not about cost saving vs renting..it's just about convenience. Theyre my tanks , they're always ready, they're always full and I have spare in the car without a drive back to the dive shop. I can take mates and kids Diving without being short of tanks Diving - it's what I do :)
Btw whilst I pay a fortune for tests I bought five of them second hand and was given the other two. When word gets around you 'collect' dive gear stuff just turns up on the front step.
(And no, although I have been a professional instructor at various points, I don't own an LDS)
