Just got back from my yearly trip to the Riviera Maya (my wife and I've been travelling down there for six or so years and were actually married in Akumal two years ago)

Anyway - we always do four or five cenote dives each trip, but this was the first time we'd ever done Angelita. Was wondering if anyone had ever done this dive, as it was fairly spectacular - with a hydrogen sulphate layer at about 100ft.

I found the following site about Angelita - for those who enjoy a different type of dive...

Hey John,
Yes, I dove it last Feb. I really liked diving below the sulfide layer in Hudson Grotto (FL) and wanted to do another "stink" dive when I was in Mexico last winter. Spectacular, especially just before entering the cloud. We maxed out ~ 140'. During the ascent through the sulfide layer I stuck very close to my buddy so we wouldn't get separated. I guess she didn't notice me, cuz I heard her scream underwater as the fogged cleared and she saw me peering into her mask about 2' away.

Pez de Diablo:
Great site for information on Angelita and what a great dive.

I put some photos from a recient dive in Angelita in my photo gallery here on SB. Check it out: http://www.scubaboard.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=8186

Fantastic photos! Put me right back in the dive. They look like they are composite art photos, except I've done the dive myself and know better...

Question - Isn't the other cenote called "Hol Chan" rather then "Chan Hol" (I dove that cenote too, but I may have gotten the name wrong)

Again - thanks for the photos.

Pez,
Nice pics of Angelita. That cenote goes by another name too, no? I also like your "Clutches of Death"...I have a similar photo taken in 2004 as well. It looked like a different Barbie was there when I dove Dos Ojos in '05, she must have to be replaced often?

John,

Cenote Chan Hol is a cave dive currently surveyed to 5054m long with no cavern zone. I don't know of any cenote Hol Chan - I do know of Cenote Ho Tul in the Sac Aktun system. If you are interested in a list of cenotes in Q Roo, check out http://www.caves.org/project/qrss/qrlong.htm

Glad you like the photos, not bad for a point and shoot Olympus C5050zoom.

Dave,

As far as I know Barbie is the same Barbie as in '94. She is moved into different positions so she may look like a new Barbie.

Because barbie is near the safe limits of penetration for a cavern dive, she doesn't get any sunlight so she stay healthy, no algae, no tan and no wrinkles and with the light water flow over her she also stays clean. So as far as I know, she doesn't need to be replaced.

PS I have been trying to find out the history behind Barbie and the croc, but so far no luck.

The Cenotes are really great. In 1999 I was in Cancun to dive and was talked into diving Cenotes, it sounded boring at the time, I was wrong.
I wish I knew the name of the Cenote. does anyone know which it might of been. It was soouth of Playa del Carmen and about 1/4 - 1/2 mi. inland from the highway. Not much info., but any idea?

Talk to Paul Heinerth about Barbie and the "Croc". He was down there one year during the Florida/Florida State game and I think he had something to do with putting the gator on the line.....Paul is a die hard Florida gator fan.

Thanks, I am suppose to join Paul and Steve Gerrard for a couple of dives near the end of the month when Paul is down.
