Good idea. I'm leaving July 9th for Aus for a month. I haven't decided on whether to do a liveaboard yet, or just do some shore dives from an island. I wear a US size 20. I may look around here and purchase a suit before I go.
Where will you be in Aus? And have you decided on which trip you'll do? How long would you go for?

I am in the process of getting certified, finally, at 43 years of age. I have been "waiting" until I looked "good" in a bathing suit/wet suit... I finally realized how much I was missing! I've decided to just FORGET the weight issue and learn to DIVE! I've loved the pool time, and this weekend will be my open water beach dive!! YIPEEE!!! My future daughter-in-law is taking the class as well.. and she is extremely thin.. and is cold, cold, cold, even with 11mm wetsuit! I was quite comfortable! I'm glad to hear that others are of my size, and age, out there diving too! Oh, this is my first post to the board also...

Hey grits:
You may want to look at
http://www.birminghamreefseekers.com/

It is a dive club in AL and it is a great bunch of people. It will get you diving more and we have lots of trips planned and it will give you more dive buddies. Maybe I will see you there.

Hi everyone,
I'm doing my certification open water dives this weekend and wanted to chime in here too. I weigh 210, and I'm 5'3". Since that's down 60 pounds from this time last year, I consider that a good thing! The stuff I've been squirming into as rentals is horrible. But I saw Liquid Fit custom wetsuits mentioned elsewhere on the board and may try something from there. I'm looking forward to diving in the Caribbean in July. And I'm lucky, my husband doesn't mind the extra floatation on my, and I don't mind his either :)
Good luck!

If you would like, feel free to join us in the "Dive into fitness" section of the board. We weigh in weekly, discuss our ups and downs and give free advice to each other. Accountability seems to be one key to losing weight (along with eating less and excercising more, LMAO). PS - I'm having a tough time now that I'm back from Coz, wish I had the same motivation as before the trip. Good luck and remember......You are by no means the only diver that is not thin. Look at the section mentioned above and you'll feel more at home. Take care, Greg

Remeber ladies, the fish don't care WHAT anyone looks like. And with all that gear on, who cares what is underneath! I am a "skinny" diver weighing in at 130, but DO NOT WEAR a bikini. It is very impractical.

Besides, I heard being underwater takes 10 pounds off the view!!!

LOL

Enjoy your diving and forget about the weight /bathing suit issue. I am 56 soon to be 57 years old, weigh 160 lbs and I love diving. I don't like being overweight from a health standpoint not a beauty one, so I am working on diet & execise to help with that. Most divers don't care what a person looks like in the water as long as they have and use good diving skills.

Good luck on your new certification and remember get out there and dive, dive, dive thats how you get better at it. You may find that people are not interested in what you look like in a bathing suit, but what to know what you saw down there and is it fun to do.

I find it it amusing that a women would want to wear a bikini while being physically active... I find them impractical and uncomfortable and I certainly don't like being ogled at..... I'm just glad you're diving...expressing and experiencing your life in one of the most awesome ways possible...you're fortuneate!

Hello. I'm new to diving, and my ample proportions haven't gotten in the way at all, except that they don't seem to make petitie/plus-size wetsuits. I have been thrilled with my Henderson Hyperstretch wetsuit, Size 12, even though my body is closer to an 18/20. I've also felt good with the sleekness of my Zeagle Zena BC. Stay wet!

What I really find entertaining is when you get a really fat DIR diver, doens't that defeat the purpose????
