I am in the process of getting certified, finally, at 43 years of age. I have been "waiting" until I looked "good" in a bathing suit/wet suit... I finally realized how much I was missing! I've decided to just FORGET the weight issue and learn to DIVE! I've loved the pool time, and this weekend will be my open water beach dive!! YIPEEE!!! My future daughter-in-law is taking the class as well.. and she is extremely thin.. and is cold, cold, cold, even with 11mm wetsuit! I was quite comfortable! I'm glad to hear that others are of my size, and age, out there diving too! Oh, this is my first post to the board also...

that's so great! it's good to see all the posts and know i'm not alone. i love diving and i hate feeling like people think i'm too big to dive or not fit enough to dive. i'm a good diver dammit! on the downside, my husband says i no longer turn him on because i'm fat, not like the skinny girls in their bikinis on the dive boat. but that's another story...

Good for you Chantana! You know...that should be all that matters - that you're good at it and that you enjoy it.

ok, none of my business... but... since you mentioned it, what's with your husband?

first, what is he thinking telling you that you no longer turn him on because you are fat? that's totally selfish and hurtful and, in my book, not acceptable.

second, there is ALWAYS a decrease in sexual "desire" as a relationship progresses,
and you have to work at it. even if you were thin as a rail, five years into the relationship it's going to take work. imho, he is just using your weight not to take
responsibility for the inevitable work that goes into maintaining a sexual relationship
over the long term.

and third, while it is nice to look skinny, real people come in all shapes and sizes.

there is ALWAYS someone out there who appreciates you for who you are, how you are. remember that. you don't have to change your body or look like a model to
be loved, so long as you are beautiful on the inside. and belive me, that shows right
through.

end of rant.

Wow!!!!, H2, that is the nicest thing to say..not just to Chantana, but to us all... :10:

Chantana, I couldn't have said it better my-self!!!!

UGH.... first of all, sorry your husband would say such a thing! Personally, I've always liked a bit of padding on my men, and it's mutual. Even if the sight of you in a bikini doesn't turn him on (and I'm right there with you; me in a bikini ain't pretty), surely the snuggleability is nothing to snort at! I think it's totally sexy to cuddle up against soft parts - hard muscle or skin and bones, not so much!

Anyway, I just wanted to add my wetsuit recommendation - I LOVE the Henderson hyperstretch! I too was sick of wearing XL men's suits (which were always too long, since I'm short). I tried on the hyperstretch in the store and bought it right away. I've actually GAINED 20 pounds since then (bah), and it still fits perfectly. I suspect the same size will work for me anywhere between 170-220 pounds!

It's made all the difference. I no longer tear up my hands getting in and out of my wetsuit, and I don't feel like a fat idiot huffing and puffing just from getting dressed!

As for skinny girls on dive boats... I feel your pain. :) But in my experience, there've been plenty of us fat chicks out there too! One of my favorite things about scuba diving as a sport is that it doesn't seem to only be for skinny people. I let my weight stop me from trying for a long time, and rental equipment didn't make being fat any easier - but now that I own my own gear, I'm totally comfortable in the water, and in front of people in my bathing suit (NOT a bikini!) squirming in and out of it.

thanks everyone. i've decided to lose this extra floatation once and for all though so I don't feel like crap on the diveboat anymore. no bikinis for me, but it'd be nice to feel more confident about changing in and out of my wetsuit and feel attractive.

i had my time as a hot young skinny girl and enjoyed it, and now i think i'm okay with being a grown woman and happy with a family and some curves. i have more to say about my happy family but i think i'll be nice and keep it to myself. ;)

Applause!!

To H20Andy for stating a truth.

To Chantana and every other person out there who isn't airbrushed and who is out doing what they want to do! I'm not bikini-mini either but I am out there and don't give a hootie patootie what anyone thinks except ME!

Yay US! Get out and dive - skip the fashion show :crafty:

I'm just wondering what some of these posters think as "fat"? I'm heading to Australia in a few weeks and wanted to dive, but now I'm a bit worried....
Like, what if a diver is 180? 220? 260? 300? Do they make dive suits in size 3x or 4x for women?

Don't worry, if you want to dive you should do it. I suspect though, that rental gear is only going to go up to a certain size. If you're really concerned, email ahead to the shop and see what they have available. I'm a US size 16 and I've never been able to wear a woman's wetsuit. I'm going to be diving in Aus in a few weeks as well, do you know where you are going/which op? We'll be doing a liveaboard out of Cairns but haven't decided yet which one.
