Stu, where you diving at? For many of us the LDS is not an issure for air. If you dive in a commerical park they are going to have air/nitrox. If you dive in the ocean their should be an LDS close to it. If you dive off a commerical boat they can supply tanks (granted not with exotic mixes).

Florida state parks don't have air, and what slows me down is that a lot of dive locations have air, but nitrox is often a drop-off and pick 'em up tomorrow deal. That was easy when the dive store was in my neighborhood.

How about a self-serve nitrox filler at your local Florida Publix market?

Happy diving!

Javascript? Well, whatever you say..
It wasnt intended to prove anything about programming, it was intended to describe to you in terms that you should understand how simple it is to "just lower your prices"..

Yes, Javascript. It described it in too simplistic terms to mean anything. Price-demand is an inverse relationship. Lower prices yield increased demand, all else equal.

Who know why those stores folded or what, if anything, would have saved them. What we all know however is that the busienss model they were using didn't work.

An online store DOES have lower costs than a retail store, unless theire stupid.

Whatever I have to say about it is basically armchair speculation as I'm not actually running BOTH a major retail store AND a major webstore. I'm pretty darned sure you're in the same boat. But Phil Ellis, who runs a major online/LDS retail store and is prominent on this board, has firsthand experience with it. Here is what he had to say recently about it.

"Just as a piece of information.....our store has an inventory in excess of $450,000. This is five, six, or seven times the typical inventory of most local scuba stores. The online side of my business costs MORE TO OPERATE than the brick and mortar store. That's right....MY ONLINE STORE COSTS MORE TO OPERATE THEN MY BRICK AND MORTAR STORE! Those that don't understand that simply don't understand e-commerce."

Wow... originally put this on a DIFFERENT thread that was LDS-bashin... so we'll put it on this one two... stand by for this mornings sermon kiddies!!! (Bring your own popcorn...):

So... Ok... SOMEBODY please explain this thread to me...

BROTHERS AND SISTERS... ya' got yer' LDS... ya' got yer' internet... complete with e-bay option. The ability to slag down your credit card is unimpeeded... and NOBODY is making you buy anything from yer' LDS... so.. what's yer beef?

I'm thinkin' that maybe what you're REALLY whinning about is that you don't feel that you're actually a part of the congregation if you don't make the weekly pilgrimage to the shrine of the LDS... (Truely I say unto you... the doors are open and they will welcome you with open arms... and registers. The embrace of the LDS shall not be lacking for anything... ) I'm thinkin' that, even though all of the toys are available to you via other chapels of commerce... you KNOW you're missing something.

Why do you persicute those who follow the othodox path... if they wish to sell for full boat retail... and others wish to BUY full boat retail... why should this impact the rites you chose to follow...

I tell ya', BROTHERS AND SISTERS, ol' Rev. Jim is confused... you're both proud of the fact that you have the tools and knowledge to avoid the pain in the purse... yet you still persist in your persicutions... BROTHERS AND SISTERS... WHAT'S YOUR *REAL* *****???

Although the LDS may beg and plead with you to abandon your tight-wad ways... yet will they sell to you, even though you walk the path of the miser or the simply frugal.

But it has been said that thou shalt not have thy cake and eat it too... so know ye' that by your actions shall the world be changed... are you read for that kiddies??? Do you have enough vis to see the future?

Again I say unto you... SPREAD IT AROUND... you still haven't hit the limit of your MASTERCARD... you CAN BUY MORE... spend until that sucker melts upon the counter you lay it down on... it is within your power to spread joy and cash far and wide and your charge to do so... (Hey... who's that guy back there... yea'... all the way in the back.... the one in the old VOIT mask and that ratty, nasty ol' wet suit... the one with... what's that... CASH in his pocket... BROTHERS AND SISTERS... save this poor soul... show him the ways of the indulgent headonist... teach him that cash don't help his bouyancy... but new gear do!!!)

... anyway... thus ends today's message...

Ya'll have fun and and the end of the day... follow your bubbles...

Sounds more like the self-delusions of an LDS disciple than a sermon. The last dying appeal that the LDS offers salvation. Beware the false prophets who would have you believe you cannot reach that great underwater heaven without worshipping at the registers of the LDS. The sea welcomes all and requires no credit cards.

So hard for the disciples to believe that friendship can be free, that good advice can be offered, without the expectations of profit. From a small circle of friends to a large social dive club, there are friends awaiting you that need not and cannot be bought.

Each must find their own path and those that wish to sacrifice their wallets to the LDS gods must be allowed their exercise of free will, but we cannot let them delude the virgin divers that their way is the only way.

Dive in peace...

I don't think anyone buys all their gear from their LDS. I give them a shot though. I like going to dive shops and talking with people that know what I'm talking about. Thers is no place around here to fill tanks either. The fire dept.? Give me a break. In general LDS prices can't compare with online stores. Manufacturers have place LDS's in a crappy position where they can't sell less than a certain % of list. There needs to be some sort of happy median between online prices and LDS prices or more and more shops will go out of business.

Amen Brother Diver... the wise man knows that ALL roads lead to Ro... errrr... the OCEAN... yea, that's it! The wise man must follow his own path and plan his own dive. Blessed be the wreck divers, the internet shoppers, the LDS adherants, the beach divers, snorklers (well... not as much as the divers)... and the boat ops...

You speak wisely and well the Gospel... let's us set the example of respect for our brothers and sisters regardless of whether they dive singles or twins... whether they (well meaningly of course) have tank-bangers or not... or whether their cert card sez' "OW" or "Scuba-Instructor-Diving-God"...

Amen and Amen... let the crusade begin!

... and, Brother Diver... all delusions are self delusions... simple depends on what color you want your dive suit to be...

I have been in the eCommerce world for 14 years. Cost of operation is not a statement of profitability or margin. Yes eCommerce models have a great physical cost of doing business, but target market is much larger and thus sales volume has the potential of being larger. The big question that most companies will not release is margin; you move more inventory in a successful eCommerce model than a brick and motor, so your margins can be lower and yet still be more profitable at a higher operational cost. An LDS without high volumes can not maintain the same margins as any business model with high volumes. So this effort to force them to lower prices through complaining is not going to work. You will either shop at your LDS or not; personal choice. Hopefully this SB trend will get old and we can get back to some diving discussions. (General observation and not directed to a single post or thread.)

Mr. Ellis has a fantastic business model, blending the eCommerce with the traditional store front. This is the way to service the total dive community and maintain lower costs. The key to success is the ability of purchasing and maintain a large inventory base to maximize wholesale discounts and thus deliver the best price to the customer.
