I'm in the market for a new SPG and dpeth gauge combo. I was hoping you folks could help me narrow down the playing field.

I've never owned a computer before but the Aeris AI seems to have a lot of nifty features (albeit, at this stage, I don't think I will use them all). But there's something appealing about the simple combo of a brass SPG and an OMS/Uwatec bottom timer. But then, I know I can also put the Aeris into gauge mode.

I'm currently a newbie diver (<20 dives), and would like to purchase something that will last me for a few years to come. Which of these combinations would you suggest? Or is ther something else I should look into?

Much thanks...

IMO there are two benefits to AI for a new diver: you will monitor your air more because you can see it easier, and the ability to track and download your SAC rate. Once a diver has gotten these in hand, the AI usefulness decreases and is less helpful.

Personally, for a new diver, I would not recommend a bottom timer. I use one for tech diving, and more and more for rec stuff, but I no longer need all the wizbangs a computer will do. Most computers today do all kinds of stuff that is less than useful to most divers, and cost a lot.

I would get a nice, fairly basic nitrox wrist computer and an SPG. If you get 30 posts, you'll get 30 different opinions thought, so good luck!

The reason I was looking into the "The Digital" watch is becuase if I went with the brass SPG, I still would need a depth gauge.

Is there a particular brand that you would recommend for a "basic" nitrox computer?

Not really. There are many out there, most good that will serve you well until, if ever, you decide you need more. Stick with a name brand, decide how much you want to spend, then look at whats available in that range. Ask specific questions if you run into problems, but with any make/model you'll get many different opinions. It's pretty hard to get something thats really bad regardless.
