This is what I have gathered from this post for my benefit.
19cf³ cylinder slung with a DIN valve, 40” non-braided hose and pressure gauge with or without an extension hose. I can get by with any serviceable 1st and 2nd stage. Sling easily made from home depot parts.
Anything deeper than 100ft in the Quarry is dark and cold with a gnome on a tricycle for the effort. So deep will not be a recurring issue. I would like to travel to warm water with it so around 8 lbs. with valve will work in my non driving wife’s check-in bag. My main goal is to breath as soon as possible, get to my buddy and then share air to the surface. So riding the little bottle to the surface is the last resort.

I would not count on a pick-up buddy. The 19 should give you plenty of gas to let your buddy know what is going on if he/she is close and paying attention. But don't waste it searching for your instabuddy.

Agreed, once you go on bail out, you bail out.

Jim,
I have did training that I feel was lacking. I would like to train with one that cared. I'm at the rescue stage and this weekend going to Blue Grotto for cavern. I'm 3 years into this and feel shorted. I seen a thread about bailout recently and you and others gave a far better response than my LDS. When could an old poop from Missouri receive training from you. Not really looking for a card though side mount or solo would work. Any time this summer when convenient.

Festus. If you don't mind my asking, what skills or deficients are you concerned about. If you have a cavern course planned, some of these issues may be addressed then. This is not intended to discourage your pursuing training with Jim though.

Far too many people get ripped off and have had to buy gear twice because of shops leading them to what they sell, and you see many people complain on here about their local shops for that very reason, it still should not be tolerated, and luckily some local shops are seeing that and turning around.

My first bailout setup was a Catalina AL19 with Zeagle RaZor Valve/1st Stage with the cheapest Octo Aeris made. Attachment was Zeagle Cam band straps. SPG was button model. I had my C-card for less than a year at this point.

... I didn't know what I didn't know; trusted my LDS.

I followed the advise from the book and I am more than happy I chose an AL40 (mines rigged with a halcyon rigging kit). It provides more then enough air to bail out from depth, even with a incredibly high SAC rate.

what size tank is your primary tank? Does it accommodate an "incredibly high SAC rate" as well? If not why not. Is drag an issue, weight? Why not carry the biggest scuba tank possible, for your primary?

Okay, so I've got the reg set, a 40" rubber hose, and the bottle. Now I just need to add rigging. I'm thinking of making my own so I can use butterfly snaps as opposed to regular bolt snaps; is there any reason none of the pre-made kits don't use butterfly snaps? Seems like a good thing to do, especially when using dry gloves :hm: To my understanding the strap should line up with the valve (in-line with the valve opening), when doing this does the upper snap not interfere with the 1st stage?
