Active Divers over the age of 50

Started diving circa 1973 and certified in 1984 (long course, it was NAUI )


Earned my NAUI instructor certification in 1987. NAUI IT in 1989 and NAUI CD in 1990.


Diving mostly in Libya and North East USA (I love diving in Cape Ann, MA, and RI). I have also had the chance to dive around the world usually leading groups when I owned my dive center in NY.


Active diving doing mostly underwater photography, some spearfishing (I suck at it), hunting for wrecks and underwater antiquities and helping in some archeological work. I teach diving on on/off basis.



Age: Younger people are starting to give me their seat on the bus now.

62 later this year. I got certified, just before my 59th bday. Diving, 2-4 times a week, Salish Sea, off Vancouver Island. Cold and salty, in a dry suit.

Not sure if this is the right place for this thread. I am curious as to how many SB members, who are still active divers, are over the age of 50? Also, how long they have been diving, how often they dive, and what types of diving they do?

I've always wanted to buy a DHR. Probably a bit hard to get parts to maintain and service them?

Look up ‘The Scuba Museum’ out of Cincinnati, OH. Rob S has a complete line of gear and parts to make ‘It happen ‘ I have 20 DHRs mostly US models but I also have German Drager & Spanish Nemrod when they came from Spain. All safe and working. Other contacts are Alec Pierce of Brechin, ON, Canada & Allan Klauda of A and D Adventures in Bergen…outside of Rochester, NY. These folks will help you get a good start. Also check out ‘Vintage Scuba Supply’ out of Selma, OR. Dan is most helpful…has some regs and parts but is slowly selling down to concentrate more on CharterTravel w/vintage gear… best of luck. The most well known "new one" was/is the Argonaut Kraken, which was developed by Bryan and Luis and others and sold exclusively through Vintage Double House (Bryan's company/site). Bryan also 'built' double hose regulators by servicing older ones and providing upgrades. I have an original Royal Aquamaster that I sent to Bryan several years ago, and it came back a "Phoenix Royal Aquamaster"; new first stage with LP and HP ports, new second stage, new hoses and wagon wheels and mouthpiece, duckbill eliminator....I think the can is the only original part remaining.

Yes, David, Bryan and Luis are the DH gurus w/VDH, sadly, ( & I didn’t know until 2 months after, ) we lost Bryan at age 57, i believe?? I don’t have an obit as Rob w/the Scuba Museum sent it to me in early Dec. ‘22. ‘Sea Hunt Forever’ Bryan. Your legacy lives on.
