Here is a Biller 54 set up for freediving. Freediving is a crucial advantage when stalking the wary striped bass. Don't focus on the gun size, a 48 can be used on stripers up to 40 pounds. Choice of spearhead is crucial for the soft fleshed bass. A detachable or slip tip is needed.
Note that the grip guard has been removed. Personal preference. The spear (arrow) is custom made (by me).

I had a MINI JBL carbon speargun,
I loved it, killing plenty of fluke/ keeper stripers

After losing it, since it is so small. I wanted to keep it in the family and buying the JBL 22 explorer. with double bands. this gun has proven it self over and over again.

You dont need and expensive gun. I must admit, my next gun will have a track for the shaft. i hear that it makes for more accurate shooting.

also there are many different factors that contribute. Visibility, i think is number one.
what good is having a gun that can shoot 21ft, if you cant see 15ft.
next is size of fish and strenght of gun. i am sure you can figure out the rest.

I learned on the Voit /Swimmaster old version closest to the Mini Magnum or current Explorer 24. It served me well for several years when the cost factor was really important.

Next I used Biller 54" guns for decades.

I eventually moved on to custom guns from Daryl Wong. Many of the competitors in the freediving nationals three years ago used his guns, from 36" to 50" in Rhode Island. They took down some nice stripers too.
