... But if there's no pain I don't see what- other than ibuprofen and rest- they're going to say.

Believe it or not, I do not blame you for not wanting to go to the Doctor, and your concerns are unfortunately true in a good number of physicians.

Most consultations have become something along the lines of "What shall I prescribe for you today?" Rarely is any effort done to search for the root of the problem. Instead, the symptoms are treated via prescription drugs, a lot of times leaving the cause untouched. Not to say that there are true exceptions to the case, and sometimes those medications are really needed, but I can understand where you are coming from.

This is perhaps a wake up call to address your strength. Your muscles were clearly not able to support you and the forces were shifted to the ligaments. You were very fortunate today, but again, I would heed those warning signs, and work on my strength. Now, notice I'm NOT saying you have to lift weights. There are many, many, ways of developing functional strength without having to touch a barbell.

By the way, by functional strength training I do not mean those circus tricks and other major silliness that people are now engaged on with balls, boards, and what not. If your strength training is helping you walk better and with less stress on your kness, then that is functional, plain and simple.

Happy to know that is nothing major and you feel much better, and believe me, I completely understand why you do not want to see the doctor. Best of luck! :14:

TG.... ice... don't forget to ice. ;) That will help with any swelling (visible or not). With my knees as bad as they are... ice is, many times, my best friend!

With all my previous knee surgeries, I've acquired a number of big, really nice, ice packs. I've been known to go to bed with ice on my knees! LOL (I don't suggest this practice to many, as the risk of freezing your skin is real... but my surgeon has supplied me with packs that I can wear for literally hours at a time!)

I should mention something... since we're talking about knees... (for some, like TG, that are not overweight, it doesn't really apply... but for us that are "fluffy" it's kinda nice to know)... for every pound of excess weight on our bodies, it is equivalent to 7 extra pounds on the knees! I've lost 54 lbs... and that's an equivalent of 378 lbs OFF of my knees!

Now I'm waiting for the day that my knees thank me for the weight loss! LOL ;)

Oh, good- I thought you were going to give me a talking to!

I wasn't going to take any pain meds other than ibuprofen anyway.

I used to do the Kathy Smith Life Weights to Lose Weight- fantastic work out. I modified the work out with those resistance ropes- you know, the rubber band thingys- in the truck so I didn't have to carry the weights. We're talking a 5 lber as my heavy weight! I'll have to get back to some of those exercises, I guess.

BTW her Life Weights to Lose Weight 2 is KILLER. That one will have to wait!

FLUFFY!
lol lol lol

My dad has lost 47 lbs and is out today buying size 38 pants! My mom (who is 4 foot 9) has lost 12 lbs! They are part of the inspiration!

Is that 7lbs stat based on the weight that's disbursed around your body and then focused on your knees? Did that make sense as a question?

Did you call me today? The phone was ringing like mad- both phones! John, our office, my mom...

About the weight dispursment... yes... what you said. :D

I only called your house phone once... a few hours ago... and it was busy. (I'm not THAT much of a stalker! :rofl3: :mooner: ;))

Does that mean I should double check that all the windows and doors are locked tonight?

Haha!

So- what do you guys think about the sciatic nerve? I went to my LDS today to drop off the DVD of Gilboa Quarry and the Dive Guy was telling me that it could be my lower back via the sciatic nerve. The pain is toward the rear of my knee and also on the side- like I said, not the knee cap. And the pain was shooting both up and down my leg when I moved my knee. And then- boom- gone.

It doesn't hurt at all- but it does feel weird. I've been wearing an ace bandage all day, too. So, now I'm ice packing my knee and my lower back. This is pathetic!

Why are you icing your back? Does it hurt? I do not see how that could be the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is not in the lower back area, is deep under your butt muscles (right under the piriformis to be specific).

The sciatic nerve could be irritated by overuse injuries or trauma directly in the pelvic area. You seem to have more of an overuse issue, but then again, you would've noticed very distinctive symptoms. Tingling of the toes of the affected area, radiating pain down to the butt of the affected area, tender and achy lumbar area.

You mentioned knee issues which possibly led to postural changes and compensations which could have definitely irritated the sciatic nerve, but as I said before, you would've noticed VERY distinctive symptoms, and the nature of your injury did not involve trauma to the pelvic area.

There is no need to ice your back unless you are having pain there. Your knee on the other hand, keep taking good care of it.

TG-- I'm with Izzy.... it's not sciatica. When the sciatic nerve is inflamed you'll notice very sharp, activity stopping pain from the lower back/butt down the back of the leg. Your injury sounds very much like a knee strain. I wouldn't worry with the sciatica... I promise, you'd know if that was the problem! (I had sciatica when I was pregnant with the kiddos...OUCH!) ;) At least you don't need ice in 2 places! You should continue to take it easy on the knee though. :)

Oh sciatica. When your butt goes numb - you've got it! Well, at least that's what happens to me when my nerve gets pinched. :dance_2:

As for me - I am dying (okay, not dying but ... you know) to go for a hike but the pollen is driving my allergies absolutely bonkers.
