Hear lots about the 60 feet limit for open water but did we all respect the limit? After your basic scuba course did you respect the 60 feet limit and, if not why did you go deeper and not respect the limit? Bet you 95% did it.

It was years ago, but when the opportunity came up to dive the Eagle in Islamorada (over 100 feet IIRC) at about dive number 8, I went. I mostly respected it after. Looking back, I shudder to think of having done this.

My first OW dive (post cert) was a reef at 65' - I never thought anything of it.

I always try to avoid exceeding my MOD, but that's about it.

I waited until I was comfortable so probably dive #8 when I tried a "deeper than 60" dive. . . I feel if you understand what is going on and you know what can happen and what happens to the body, your gear, air, and everything else, you should be fine. My deepest dive as an OW diver was 95 feet on a wreck in Lake Michigan. Do your safety stops and plan your dives well and you'll be fine. Now I'm AOW and in all honesty, I feel like I already knew all I needed to know before I took my AOW from reading, talking to people, and learning at dive sites. While I would still encourage AOW to people, I repsected the 60ft and knew I had to be more careful when I went under it.

With my training organization (NASE) 60ft is only limited to the the first 4 training dives. After that the max recommended depth is 130ft. It also possible to waive this requirment if local conditions warrent it

I did go beyond 60' as an OW diver on many occasions. Why? It's a fairly arbitrary number, and there was stuff I wanted to see below 60'.

I never exceeded any hard limits (O2 MOD, NDL, etc.) nor did I exceed my comfort level.

I think I went down to 90 feet on dive #4 after certification (on purpose). I felt comfortable/confident, and besides, that's where the reef was!

IMO, the 60 foot OW depth is more of a guideline/suggestion than any kind of limit.

Besides, I know a bunch of very experienced divers (1000+ dives) who only took their OW cert., and nothing else. Does that mean they should stick to 60 and shallower until they take AOW?

Anytime I was on a boat after OW classes, it was in 60-80' of water. Didn't take too long for that to become 90-110'.

I was always under the impression that OW certification opened you up to rec limits of 130' :)

That's what I thought too. 130' - rec diving "limit"
