How much you move your fins relates to what the water is doing. I remember the first time I was able to actually arrest all my movement under water. I fell over to my left side. Yesterday, I was able to do it, stay upright and man is it an amazing feeling.

Watching these guys on video is awesome. But let me tell you, diving with them in the water is something else entirely. I've been amazed at what it's like to dive with people at that level. Task loaded with 3-4-5 things and they just don't move in the water. It's right there in front of you, and it's like you're watching a movie.

Since you brought it up - Valve Drills??? The DVD shows a diver reaching back over their shoulder opening / closing the tank valve. What is that supposed to demonstrate? That's it's possible? Are they suggesting one should practice this drill from-to-time? I can reach my valve and turn it. But the point is no information is offered.

Again Don, this DVD is a supplement to their class called Essentials to Recreational Diving. They never meant for it to be a replacement for class nor they did mean for it to be self contained and all inclusive of all information you need to understand each skill.

As an aside, a valve drill in recreational diving helps you understand whether or not your gear is configured in a way where you could reach your own valve. And BTW, practice allows you to get better at it. Reaching your own valve is beneficial in several scenarios including realizing that the valve is only partially open (SPG bounces when you inhale), the valve is not open at all (you take a breath and nothing comes out), checking to see that the valve has not gotten rolled off by an over-zealous buddy or kelp.

Gosh man, did you even read my post? You replied to it??!?

This is from the post you just replied to: "Again, had I read the report (description) I would have realized it before purchasing" and I think I've said that twice now.

I've read your posts and I understand that you are dissapointed with the video. I was dissapointed with the lack of voice overs as well, but your beating a dead dog with your dissapointment.

I keep seeing you post on how you are dissapointed in the skills that were demonstrated, but if you would have read the page on the 5thd-x website you would have known exactly what skills were to be presented.

I also read a post where you didn't realize that the dvd was going to be based on recreational DIR diving. Again, the same thing applies here as above. That was the point of my post.

Instead of complaining and writing the same thing over and over again here, you could write some comments to 5thd-x. I'm sure they would like to hear your feedback on how the dvd could be improved.

Being able to turn around and turn your tank valve off is essential to your safety. If part of your first stage blew, or you lost a burst disc--you should be able to reach back and turn off your tank, turning it on only to breathe, etc (all while ascending).

Just an FYI. If your burst disk blew and your tank was turned off the gas would still exhaust through the blown burst disk. I've seen it happen with tanks laying in the sun waiting to be used. :)

It was also far more bacic than I expected. How to clear a mask??? I wasn't expecting it to be oriented toward a group that needs to know how to clear a mask. Yet for those who don't know how, I doubt they would learn the skill from watching that DVD. It was very poorly presented.

I think the point is this: Can you clear your mask mid water without changing your depth or silting up the bottom.

BTW what recreational skills were you looking for?

Yeah yeah I didn't mean burst disc--meant port plug. I just got up, gimme a break! :D

One problem with the DIRF classes has been lack of proper video demonstrations of the skills. For example, during my class we used those little clips from GUE's website. I think this DVD was meant to fill that void, but it certainly leaves a lot to be desired and is probably next to uesless for anyone not familiar with DIR.

I use modified frog as my kick of choice when moving around slowly. I use the modified flutter in tight spots, for example, when someone gets too close to my fins and I don't want to kick their mask off. It also comes in handy in air share situations when another diver is directing you from behind with touch contact.

The mask drill could use some explanation, and yes you should practice it. Some people aren't able to do it in shallow waters without losing their buoyancy and popping to the surface.

Also, the frog kicks are not just about not silting the place, but I personally find them to take less effort than the flutter, and I think they help lower my SCR though I have no hard evidence for this.

I think the DVD could really use some explanations as to how these skills are done and why they are important for recreational divers.

I'm sorry but I don't how many times I can make statements like the two below:

Again, had I read the report I would have realized it before purchasing.

Pretty stupid of me I know, but I'm browsing Amazon for Scuba DVD's and up pops Essentials for Rec Divers. I take pride in my skills and I'm always wanting to improve. So is my wife. Yet, I don't have a clue who 5thd-x is or that they are associated with DIR. I order the DVD.

I think you're beating the dead horse. And yes I do know how many... this is the last one.
