God help me if the measure of the quality of my diving ever becomes, "Well I lived through THAT one!"

If you dive long enough and push yourself enough. You will have a dive (s) like that. Not to be used to measure the quality of your diving, but it is a gut check.

Have you ever been at a safety stop with a dozen or so other divers? It usually works out, but it would be much smoother if they all had some degree of mastery of the basic skills outlined in the DVD. Don't get me wrong, I do find the push offs, fin slapping, arm flailing and crashes highly amusing.

You are assuming he hasn't mastered a drifting safety stop. I checked out his profile and see that he has dived Cozumel and lived to make posts so one would think he is able to make a safety stop without clutching a line.

I think the most valuable part of the DVD was the video of the kick demonstration.

Agreed, but hey, we're talking about recreational diving here right? Hopefully those 60ft reef dives don't get too taxing that I have "gut checks". I expect my dive on the USS Ozark to put some butterflies in my stomach!

Twice, I've had gut checks ice diving. Another on a deco dive. I suppose if I did enough 60 ft reef dives I might have one there too. Then again...maybe not ;)

I'm not addressing his skills specifically. I'm defending the skills in the context of recreational diving based on personal observation.

Whatchoo mean 60 foot reef dives? Last time I checked, recreational diving included wreck dives up to 130 feet.

I've had a couple 'gut check' dives in the last year. One in a lake with a max depth of 80' and another in a river with a max depth of 20'. I think they can crop up where you least expect them.
