Stupid question,

Does the SPG that's going to be used on my deco reg (for 50% EAN only/ not 100%) need to be 02 cleaned? Or do I just need to swap out o-rings with viton or other O2 friendly - o-rings?

And remind me, the 2nd stage hose for a deco reg is 40" right?

I've always used 50/50 regs/spg straight out of the box even though the industry uses 40% as their demarcation point. Viton o-rings with oxygen compatible lube may not be a bad idea for the spindle o-rings. 40" hose is convenient for wrapping the hose around the neck, but shorter hoses work if you want it staying in front of you, which isn't a problem if you aren't dealing with multiple tanks.

Any device or piece of equipment that is to be used with any mix greater than 40% O2 should be prepared for O2 service.

You can probably get away without O2 cleaning everything for a 50%. I personally use an O2 clean hose and gauge for anything over 40%. OMS and XS scuba both have O2 clean pressure gauges, and I'm sure others do too.

gear used for EAN 50 should be O2 clean. This includes tank as well.

if you're on an O2 deco bottle and your mask isn't O2 clean, should you go onto backgas if you need to clear your mask?

:rofl3:
Forget the mask but think whether your p valve is O2 clean .....

PS. OK - I meant regulators and tanks.....and you know this very well

That your clear it very very slowly - not to build up any heat to quickly:D

edit: actually you might check with the vendors. I inquired and found that although publicly rated at 40% when I checked I was told 50% would not be an issue:)

Some say you need it, some say you don't.

Here's my take:

1) With good technique opening valves, you *probably* could get away with a lot of crud

2) With a 'Scuba' O2 clean set and poor technique, you still can have problems.

With that, clean it to a reasonable point and always use good technique when opening valves.

EDIT: Also add - always use o2 compatible materials. good techique and cleanliness doesn't help if it the material is nothing more than fuel.
