Because I like the grate open...if someone should be stupid and dies in the sea tiger while doing moronic things..guess what will happen.....

Because I like to dive to 240ft....when people dive to 240 feet like idiots and die...guess what happens....

Because I like not being sued...when I am on a boat and someone does something stupid and I didn't say something...guess who their wife/uncle/mother/dog will go to to sue...that's right the dive instructor on the boat that didn't say something...

Because I like the scuba industry unregulated....

Same reason I hate Jackass. It's not they the DID it, it's that they filmed themselves doing it AND then posted it on youtube for everyone to see. There is no disclaimer of "don't try this, we're idiots" or anything. So it has the potential to embolden others to do the same.

Catherine is right - a lot of people do far more dangerous things than these guys and don't get picked on like this. Motocross racing, hang gliding, skateboarding in traffic, etc. A lot of free divers are killed every year, too.

Doing these dives on a single air tank, while obviously less safe than the whole redundant tanks/trimix ordeal, is still quite possible if you're fast enough. A PO2 of 2 isn't that bad in the grand scheme of things - it's a little risky but most people can get away with it. These guys are screwed if one of their regs fails at depth, but chances of that happening are pretty low. You'd be surprised how many people in the islands have done dives like this (and deeper) on a single 72 with no pressure gauge, a metal backpack, and duck feet.

I don't see myself doing this (a long boat trip for 3 minutes narked out of my gourd - big whoop) and IMO it's kind of lame how they're bragging about it, but all these warnings of certain death are a little extreme.

well said sherm.

Hey,

I am just making conversation.:D

But, it is something I wonder about. Sherm, I really doubt they will close the grate because we kill more pedestrians in Honolulu than any city in America, and they still don't really give tickets, that I ever see.

I'm just saying, if you do other things, people are less judgemental. Something about SCUBA divers, they are very harsh and opinionated I find. Freedivers don't really give each other such a hard time. The funny thing is, these guys do not really run the risk of hurting anyone but themselves, relative to crashing things into buildings, etc... I save my wrath for drunk drivers and people like that.

You still have the cumlative risk issue, no one ever answers that.
I am just saying the guy could be a really nice guy and NOT stupid. I know a few really smart people that just do this kind of thing occasionally. What about guys that ride big monster waves? Surfers don't really nag each other about taking risks, screwing up, etc. It is just a given that they are there for a rush, and nobody questions them.

well, eight years on Oahu, and I have not seen *all these idiots* die.
I see people having heart attacks, basically. So why not rant about that?
Man, you cannot even mention THAT, divers will circle the wagons.
Not so logical. Especially for techies that have a handle on math and probablity.

Sorry...all our movies are in French, so there is nothing to do.

You don't go down town much during business hours huh? They stand on the corners ticketing people. Well, not the homeless, they wont pay a ticket which means no revenue but thats another story. :)

Now, just curious why you all seem *angry* with them?

Do you feel this way about base jumping, racing motorcyles, diving with Great Whites?
I mean, why do you really care if they want to do this? How about hang gliders? I wouldn't do it, but I would not do a lot of things...I don't really care if they do it. People like this usually just do it once. You guys probably actually take more risk, total, by diving every other day *responsibly*.

Thats a good question and I had to think about it.

What annoys me is that they are doing a dive that should be basically safe but is not because of bad choices.

Its like racing a motorcycle without helmet or body armor, skydiving without a reserve chute ,climbing El Capitan without rain gear, cave diving without a guideline etc. Basically just stupid.

You rant enough about Heart Attacks etc for all of us, I can start though if you would like me to.

Some of you seem to think that 300 feet on air is a problem due to gas supply on an 80 tank. That is definitely not true if you don't stay long and stay mellow. The real danger is toxiing out on air at 300 feet. That is a risk that they really can't mitigate. I was surprised to see them actively swimming at that depth.

The camera man looked pretty blitzed to me, while the bald guy seemed fine except for incessantly signaling OK. Some people really can handle narcosis much better than others.
They really do look like dorks.

As for the Air 2, snorkel and long fins... that is pretty much how I dive, (but not that deep on air).

I see nothing in the video that is that remarkable (or unbelievable). People are descending to over 500 feet now while holding their breath; going to 300 feet with a buddy and a spare deco tank in warm, clear water is no big deal.. as long as you don't tox out.

Well, my rants about heart attacks are at least empirically correct.

It is an urban myth that all these irresponsible thrill seekers are dying. That is not who is dying....but most divers really think that is *beside the point*.

Besides, if I want to crawl under the grate, that is really my right because it is still a free country. A lot of the divers you *like* were crawling in there long before tech diving was putting money in their pockets or you were on Oahu. Hope you know this is not personal, am just pointing out the truth.

See, everybody draws the line someplace different. Yesterday, I told JB I was NOT riding on this little narrow beautiful road, because every 20 minutes or so, some nut case came flying around blind curves and might take me out. He said ".....yea, maybe", (like so what?). So we had a little stand off, and ultimately, I did not want the risk for the benefit and we chose a wider, straighter road. I am sure he thought I was being a wuss.

I just don't think you should decide for others who can go under the grate and who can't, who can dive in an unhealthy state, who can paddle solo to Molakai, who can ride a monster wave....

I am really just pondering what makes the dive community "different" not insulting anyone.

The only other course the thread can take is everybody just posting that the guy is an idiot and deserves to die ...and we really do not know that.

PS: Dumpster, you are a dying breed.
