Hey, we are not in the "practioner's lounge" where Kevrumbo is using an incorrect term, are we?

This was my thread, if I remember correctly. I am almost positive you are a closet stroke, anyway. Strokes have unified teams too, you know.

JeffG, I hope you are riding that mountain bike responsibly. Jay says they have a bike mafia.

I know no bounds.

Ha

EGO? I cannot think of any other reason people would climb cliffs, in the first place, or jump out of a plane, for that matter. You are sort of describing two types of people: ones that want to *live* and ones who don't want to *die* and they are both doing things with slightly different technique, doesn't that strike you as funny?

Catherine,

I believe I know you somewhat. But I cannot figure out how you can make the above statement, painting all with the same brush!

I have not climbed; it seems like too much work to me. But I bet there are a lot of folks that do it because it is FUN to them.

I always wanted to try sky diving. I thought it would be FUN, and it was. It had absolutely nothing to do with ego. I really don't think I'm deluding myself, either.

I'm the opposite of sea nmf -- I've gone climbing (sport climbing only -- nothing multi-pitch) and loved it, but don't think I'll ever jump out of a plane.

Scuba diving is really not that different from these. You're leaving relative safety (perfectly good airplane, solid ground, floating boat) and choosing to put yourself in a place that is hostile to human life using some sort of safety apparatus (parachute, climbing harness and rope, or scuba unit).

sea nmf , Well, why is it fun?

Isn't overcoming your fear an ego thing?

I don't think ego is bad, I guess. I think psychiatrists say we all have an ego anyway. Id, ego, superego. So..is it your superego or your id that makes it fun? I'd say those clowns are ids, for sure.

Actually, it is the id that drives the risk taking primal nature, the ego is there to keep the id in check and keep it safe. But in this case, we are talking about the slang use of the ego, not Freud's definition.

Good point, JB says the same about crotch rocket riders who do wheelies in traffic and "give him a bad name" He is very serious when he says it too.

Maybe my problem is that I have an affinity for idiots for some reason? Oh..yea, like my parents, lol. I feel protective of idiots. My mother was flying single engine Cessnas solo with only me, when she was 8 months pregnant, who would do that? No wonder my thinking is messed up, I'm damaged.

Still, I think I have some practical points about the best thing you can do for your dive safety is work out regularly...number one, no doubt about it.

Dennis, you are as nosey as I am, BTW. And, I really want to know if you have ever once used that pony you bought? Or did you just skip right into tech diving? You better hope that there are not pictures of you floating around on the internet lugging your "double" around manually, Palauan style.

It was fun because of the floating, peacefullness of the slow ride down. Personally, I did not enjoy the freefall. But some people like that because of the adrenaline rush. But the floating down, the quiet, it was really fun. The scenery was fabulous, too.

And I wasn't that afraid (maybe I should have been) to do it because it is as relatively safe as scuba, so my ego did not need to be stroked by overcoming fear that wasn't really there.

But if you want to believe it was my ego, go ahead. I just think you are smarter than to make such a broad statement and believe it to be true.

I did not know you did that...
well, if you say it wasn't, I believe you.
IF I did it..it would be fear and the thrill, I think.
Scenery would not be enough.
I would like to paraglide off Waimanalo, want to?
I just think you are smarter than..
I'm not, I am very id.

Actually, I would like to paraglide. It seems like it would be my favorite part of the skydiving experience. However, I really don't want to like it too much because I can't afford diving, let alone another expensive sport.

Maybe, since you looked at skydiving and cliff climbing from your perspective (as we all do), you could be aware of it and acknowledge that there are different reasons why people do things. It is not easy to do, I agree. Sometimes when someone says something that is entirely outside my perspective, I have to take it a face value because I cannot relate.

Deep. Doctor? :D
