I have a group of people that would like to get certified in the June and July time frame. I was hoping to our our schedule that they could take a 3 day course so they could get it all completed during our short stays in Hawaii. I've seen it priced for around $500 at a lot of places, but has anyone seen it for less? What about getting a group discount?

Does anyone know if Island Divers Hawaii is the only place for Tech diving lessons on Oahu?

The best diving then is on the North Shore; where are you/they staying? Deep Ecology in Haleiwa may give military discount on top of their advertised $350 for groups of 3 or more (tell Pat that Mano sent you). Who ever you go with, get the books/dvd well in advance and have as much of the homework done before class starts.

If you buy gear from the shop you are training with it should be close to internet prices or you are at the wrong shop (don't tell Pat I said that). If everybody needs M,S&F try for a group deal on that as well, even though everyone might get different stuff.

Ask a lot of Q's about your class schedule; during the week will likely be easier logistics and better diving. Have fun and Aloha!

Thanks Gabe, love ya.

Try Kamaina Divers (scotitheduck), he teaches O/W :) ( I am sure he doesn't need my endorsement, he'll have 17 people chime in here shortly)

Why would you train in Hawaii and not just get certified in Virginia? Wouldn't your friends rather show up all ready knowing how to dive so you can enjoy the diving and sight seeing instead of having to take a class?

Just my .02

if your dead set on learning here i'd recommend starting class there, and doing your dives here, retention level is only 40~50% on 3~4 week courses, now cram that into 3 days and well if you can imagine the amount you'll take home will not be worth it,
I'd also recommend Gabe w/Kaimana and if you pm him i'm sure he'll hook you up
as for tek diving, hope your not planning on getting into tek with 50~99 dives under your belt, even though the minimums will legally get you in a class no one is ready for the rigors of techical diving until you have way way more experience and i'd be leary of anyone who would take your money, in the NAUI tek program you have to be at least a divemaster or higher to even start in tek and many people even at that level are NOT ready for it!!

...in the NAUI tek program you have to be at least a divemaster or higher to even start in tek ...

This is not true. Divemaster is a pre-req for becoming an instructor, a completely separate path from technical diving certification. That being said, I agree that a greater level of experience is needed beyond just a basic OW card.

Also, Randy stated he has a group of people looking for OW certs, he did not mention that he was one of them. For all we know, Randy could be looking for a Trimix I or II cert while his buddies are stuck out at Kewalo Pipe.

His profile indicates 50-99 dives. Which is the right amount of dives for a NAUI INTRO TO TECH class. Pre-reqs are 25 dives + Nitrox + 5 dives on Nitrox. I would have no issues doing a Intro to tech course with him, as a lot of the skills covered are the basics which will make any diver a better diver, even if they choose to stay recreational.

As for anything more than that...well his profile is probably out of date.

If you strictly go by the standards he may even qualify for the Helitrox/Technical Nitrox/Deco Procedures Combo....even with only 75 dives, again that is strictly by the NAUI S&P standards...not mine, and your are right-on capt scotty...not enough experience or dives to even think about it.

Just wanted to be the first! Can't go wrong with Kamaina Divers, best instructor/dive buddy on the island, hands down!

"Try Sherman..... AKA Scuba And Dream. He teaches tek courses as well."
While I don't know Sherman, I have heard nothing but good things about him. If or when I decied to go tech, he would/will be the one I call.

Real nice fellas.... thanks for all the props. I always say that if you can do the books and pool at home on the mainland DO IT, DO IT... DO IT (think Ben Stiller in Starsky and Hutch) That way when you come out you just have 4 Open Water dives to do!

Either way.... let me know and we can try to get somethin together. Killjoy, wanna DMC?
