Vanderbilt Head Football Coach Will Be James Franklin, According To Report

James Franklin, assistant head coach/ offensive coordinator at Maryland and the head coach in waiting at College Park, will leave the Terps and become the next football coach at Vanderbilt according to a report published today.

The report comes from the Washington Post, the same source that yesterday had Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn replacing departed Commodores coach Robbie Caldwell in Nashville. in this case getting the news slightly wrong—they did qualify the report as being speculative—is somewhat understandable, as the circumstances of the Malzahn negotiations changed rapidly over the course of just a few hours yesterday.

The collapse of those negotiations leaves Vandy with Franklin, an assistant who while not flashy was impressive enough for Ralph Friedgen and the Maryland administration to name him the head-coach-in-waiting pending Friedgen’s departure. As with Will Muschamp at Texas, this didn’t work out, but Maryland may not be overly emotional over his departure. A contract clause in Franklin’s existing agreement with Maryland specifically requires a payment of a $1 million in January 2012 to Franklin if he is not named head coach by that date. In avoiding that payment and saving Vandy the money it might have had to throw at Malzahn, Franklin’s move continues a pattern of thrift in the 2010 college football hiring season.

LSU puts limits on recruiting
Tigers self-impose restrictions on football program
2/17/10 |

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU will take away two football scholarships and limit recruiting visits in hopes the NCAA will accept the self-imposed discipline as its mandated punishment for rules violations discovered by the school in 2009.

Last spring, LSU reported football recruiting violations that included improper telephone contact, transportation and housing involving a former assistant coach and player.

The initial probe, which began in the fall of 2009, centered on former wide receivers coach D.J. McCarthy, who resigned late last season, and defensive lineman Akiem Hicks, a junior college transfer who never played during his only season and has since left LSU.

“LSU took quick and thorough action when we discovered these violations and we are hopeful the NCAA will ultimately agree with our assessment of this case,” LSU Chancellor Michael Martin said.

The scholarship reduction applies to the 2011-12 class, and the reduction in official visits applies to the current academic year.

During the investigation, LSU discovered additional violations such as improper telephone calls between administrators in the football program, who were not coaches, and recruits, their parents or high school coaches.

Oh you have got to be kidding me!!! Where is the Mad Hatter??? I thought he coached LSU but it looks like his VooDoo magic just went to NC!!!!! Talk about another bad break for Tenn!

Yes indeed! A real kick in the gonads. :shakehead:

Wow. I can't believe how WELL UCF is playing against UGa. That they are a Central Florida University makes it that much more delicious! Go Knights!

Well I think GA proved that you simply do not send a 6-6 team to a bowl game. So far two SEC 6-6 teams and two losses. I would rather have less teams in bowl games and a greater win percentage!
