Two day Trip to Cortez Banks on the Great Escape
Cost; $375.00
Cortez Banks is basically a seamount or a submerged island that makes a diveable area roughly 7 miles by 2 miles. It is about 100 miles from San Diego or LA, Diving on Cortez Banks is limited to advance divers only; conditions can be from flat calm, 150 ft + viz to 50 foot Monster waves. The marine life on these banks is pristine, with abalone, nudibranchs, and Bat rays, large schools of tuna, White Sea bass and even hydrocoral. The bottoms varies from sandy with some boulders to large kelp paddies, the top of the mount is about 6 feet from the surface and you can easily find yourself facing the abyss.
This trip is always ruled by Weather Permitting. Our back up plan will be San Clemente Island, Located approximately 25 miles south of Santa Catalina, San Clemente Island is known for its great variety. The "lee" of Clemente is home to consistently good water clarity, usually better than that found at Catalina. Typical visibility is 60' - 80'+. Northwest Harbor is home of the shipwreck USS Butler, a naval destroyer sitting on a 80' sandy bottom that we sometimes dive. The "backside" of San Clemente is known for abundant lobsters, pink and green abalone, and good spear fishing. There are many isolated deep water reef systems and pinnacles such as "9-fathoms" which offers clear water, rock scallops, purple coral colonies, plus big fish.
