2 basic dir questions

1) could someone discribe (or point out a link) just what is dir gear. I did find one serious discription but it was way over my head. I am a new diver and am starting to buy gear and want to get stuff right.

2) is an entry level dir class taught in canada.

The only GUE instructor I know of is Dan Mackay in Kingston Ontario. However, there are other instructors who dive DIR and are not apart of GUE. Here's Dan's info:
