I only want to point out that these panic moments can happen at any time, not only when there is a skill practice. The skills may have been completed just fine and most of the dive could have been over before something happened to make him panic.

You can usually get good flight deals from Houston to Cozumel or Cancun.
Cozumel is truly incredible for diving and there are quite a few great dive ops there. I would recommend Aldora Divers, and not just because I used to work there, but because they are excellent. But you can do your homework...

Ummmm, I can't believe I even need to write this but, no one ever tips before the paperwork is signed. People who do not pass don't tip.
Instructors do not expect tips but again chocolates, lunch, a 20$ or anything is really just a nice way to say thanks (if you actually want to say thanks)...
If tipping just stopped, most DM's would still remain in their jobs. Maybe you would see a shortage of waters and waitress'. Here in Mexico, very few would find other jobs, there simply aren't many choices.

Wow! Where do you catch those crabs? I am in Bellingham often. I've never ventured into the water up there, too cold, I'm a wimp.

For a dive course just a 20$, bottle of wine, some chocolate and etc. is a very nice way to say thank you and that you appreciated the work and patience.
