    Bohol/Sipadan

Since you say you are flying out of Taiwan, have you considered diving locally, mainly Green Island and Orchid Island, off the southeast coast of Taiwan, accessible from Taitung. 4D/3N really means only 2 diving days, since you're going to spend at least half of the first day getting to your...

    Tulamben

I found that my dive guide at Tauch Terminal to be pretty good. They were very safety conscious, almost to the point of being annoying, but this is good right? During the check dive and the first few dives, they were very careful in asking our air etc, but shortly after we became used to...

where to go in asia? with a non-diver...

In the world according to the US State Department, there probably is a travel advisory for all islamic nations, and most other parts of the third world. In reality these places are usually quite safe. For some reason, the US government thinks the safest place in the world is the United States...

    SARS ruined my trip...

So it has finally happenned. They've been talking about cancelling the Taipei-Manado flight for some time now, since there are very few people on this flight. I'm surprised it took this long. Pre-SARS, I took this flight with only about 30 people on board, 10 of which were travelling with...

    Help with a video camera

If you are interested in editing using a computer, then digital video is really the only option. Creating MPEG clips is really quite simple, and all you will need is a Firewire (IEEE1394) card for your computer. Alternatively, you can buy a video capture card with a normal A/V input, but the...

    Unreliable Layang Layang Resort Malaysia

That's why there are insurance companies selling trip cancellation insurance... Flying from KL to KK is hardly a life changing journey. Besides, airlines have a right to change their itineraries as they choose. As a frequent traveller, I don't like that much either, but it does happen...

Forget the WAR, what about SARS

So, the way I look at it, this disease is spread by who knows what, and there is a two week incubation period. As a person residing in an infected area, I think the responsible thing to do is avoid any unnecessary travel until we know 100% how the disease is spread. As far as I know, I...

Forget the WAR, what about SARS

If you asked me last week about the SARS "epidemic", I would have brushed it off as something you see on the news...but now it's really starting to hit home. How are things in other parts of SE Asia? I hear Singapore has it pretty bad. A renound underwater photographer, Wilma Tan has...

    Unreliable Layang Layang Resort Malaysia

These are troubled times we live in, and the way I see it, Layangx2 Resort has done nothing wrong. Unless I read you incorrectly, the resort DID refund you fully for their portion of the trip. Regarding the Air Asia portion, you should be complaining to the airline about stringent cancellation...

Effects of Iraq Conflict on Asia...

For now, it seems life goes on as usual. I don't see too much difference yet, except that if you are flying an American carrier or are flying to the United States/Canada, you have to go through extra security measures like manual searches and taking off your shoes. I'm all for extra security...

    Sea & Sea DC 3000

I finally caught up with the friend who bought the Ricoh RR30. While the focus and shutter lag is quick, storing files into the memory card is extremely slow in higher resolutions. Sure, it's a bigger file but it shouldn't be that slow.

Back inflate BC's in the tropics??

From what I've seen, more people dive using jacket style BC's over here. In the group of divers I usually dive with, there are only 3 out of about 15 who have a back inflate BC. What I said about back inflate BC's being heavier....I think this may be the case here in the tropcis because many...

Back inflate BC's in the tropics??

Strange how nobody from our side of the world replied to your question. I dive using a Zeagle BC and have had no problems at all. You'll find that most people out here don't really care what gear you use. Because back inflated BC's tend to be heavier than a normal jacket style BC, the only...

    Sea & Sea DC 3000

Last month, I was seriously considering buying the Sea&Sea DX3000 system, and after quite a bit of research, here is my two cents worth. 1. Prices (in Taiwan$ and US$ Equivalents): Housing: NT$9500/US$271 Ricoh Caplio RR30 Camera: NT$13500/US$386 Camera + Housing...

What digital camera do you use?

After two years of shooting DV using a PC-100 with LMI Mako Housing (I finally got enough money together to buy the LMI HID light system last month), I bought a Minolta DiMage Xi with the optional Minolta housing rated to 30m. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the Olympus, but the...

    Sipadan

Sipadan is not quite what it used to be....the last time I went was in March 2002 (4th visit). The vis was terrible, around 10m or so. When we finally saw the barracudas, my video camera had a hard time focusing on the large mass of fish behind the backscatter. I think the vis is seasonal...

    Sipadan on a budget?!?

I don't think it's possible to dive Sipadan on a budget. Bear in mind that the prices are not all that outrageous considering you get unlimited diving and pretty near 5 meals a day included in the package. I've been to Sipadan three of four times now, can't remember exactly, and the prices...

    Hellllllllllllllllpa!

Everytime I have ventured into a computer store to look at DVD burners, luckily, I have been talked out of it by the salesperson. I think he probably fears that I'll go back and yell and scream from all the problems that I'm sure I would encounter. Sparky30 talked about burning VCD clips...

    dive equipment in taiwan

Taiwan is not know for inexpensive imported dive gear, especially Scubapro. Most locals buy from their instructors or dive shops but there has been a trend of mail order lately, primarily due to the cost difference. You can look on Scubapro's website for the authorized dealer in Taiwan.
