Amira liveaboard trip report for Raja Ampat- from a macro lover’s perspective

Misool to Halmahera TL;DR: Raja Ampat and Halmahera were surprisingly macro rich environments with stunning landscapes. I didn’t bring my OM-1 and macro lens at the suggestion of multiple photographers, and I found myself regretting that decision. You can make a Raja Ampat trip a macro...

    Liveaboard "Go Bag"

What do you put in your "go bag." We are thinking: passports, cash, one cell phone and maybe even a battery bank and charger just in case. Cell phones have satellite based SOS but we are also thinking PLB1 in our dry bag. What are we missing?

Head to head with the 60mm vs 90mm on the OM-1

I wanted to share head to head shots of my favorite South Florida subject: Janolus flavoanulatus. I am including the edits and the originals for apples to apples comparison. Also, feedback and critiques is always welcome. We are both partially color blind, so if anything appears to be overdone...

    Camera decision for Amira liveaboard

This may seem like a crazy question, but… we have a trip on Amira planned for Raja Ampat in February. I upgraded to the OM-1 three months ago, but I am only set up for macro/supermacro. I only have the 90mm lens at this point. I have also only ever used the camera at the Blue Heron Bridge, a...

    TG-6 to MFT Setup

I'll be the first to admit: I am not great with grasping the camera stuff. I learn enough to figure out my settings and then forget most of what I learned. So please keep it somewhat simple. I am a supermacro shooter. I've gotten some stellar results with the TG-6 but I know I could get better...

Warm water bibbed hood to protect against jellies

You know how they say “moon jellies shouldn’t cause much of a reaction in most people” and “moon jelly nematocysts don’t penetrate the skin.” Welp, I am that “certain person” who really reacts, and it just keeps getting worse. I’m to the point where I can’t even go in the ocean to swim without...

    Thousand Islands?

We are diving with the Amira in February, and would love to get some advice on itinerary. I have searched the forum but I'm not seeing anything post-pandemic. We are considering arriving in Jakarta 2-3 days early to leave time for any flight issues. We will go to Lembeh when at the end of the...

Trip Report Buceo Anilao and Atlantis Dumaguete

TL;DR- Buceo Anilao- 10/10 absolute dream for the macro diver. Extremely photographer oriented. Five-star concierge dive service. We never touched any gear except our cameras. Rooms have a bit more local feel, but we loved that. Tons of thoughtful amenities for the frequent dives. Absolute best...

    Liveaboard Covid quarantine- Debate

Assuming that they are not in a locality that requires it, should liveaboards require guests who test positive to quarantine? We just got back from a highly infectious liveaboard that DID have this requirement. With at least 70% of the guests infected, welp, it's safe to say it didn't work...

Trip Report Trip Report: Sea of Cortez on the Rocio Del Mar

Whewee, we are in a hotel in Arizona, fresh off the Rocio Del Mar.... it was a memorable trip, to be sure, and will likely go down in infamy for all on board. Skip down a bit if you just want to hear about the boat. The trip starts in the port of Puerto Penasco, where we got to enjoy the flat...

Philippines in September- private guide and/or boat at Buceo?

We are trying to decide if we should hire a private guide and/or boat for our September trip. We are supermacro hunters and love to take it EXTREMELY slow. I can look at the same 1ft rock for half an hour, easily. I can also get 3 hours on an 80L at the right dive site. (Shallow, of course.)...

Trigeminal Neuralgia and Diving- Medication question- Carbamazepine

I was just diagnosed with neuralgia of the seventh cranial nerve, or Geniculate Neuralgia, a very similar neuralgia to Trigeminal neuralgia, which is much more familiar to most. My symptoms have been characterized by deep, excruciating, ice-pick like pain in my right ear, seemingly triggered by...

La Galigo and Carpe Diem Liveaboards in Raja Ampat

Divingsquad's write-up on North Raja Ampat has convinced that we must incorporate Wayag in to our November 2023 Indonesia extravaganza. So, we are thinking about doing a south/central Raja Ampat trip with Carpe Diem, then two days later hopping on La Galigo to head up North. I don't see any...

Raja Ampat Liveaboard for Nov 2023

We are considering booking Raja Ampat for the end of 2023. We haven't been to Indonesia in years, since we were fairly new divers, and didn't really appreciate the amazingness of it, especially the macros. We were in Amed and then Gili. We would love to go to Raja Ampat, and the Seahorse...

    Decorator Crabs :)

All of these are from SE Florida, 3-6 Meters depth. Alright, I know these guys are super hard to ID, but I thought I'd give it a go. First up is a super cool hydroid crab. It has some extremely skinny long legs. Next, is two shots of a TINY crab that is basically covered in sand. Lastly...

Scorpion fish, possibly juvenile, with very unique coloring in Florida

This scorpionfish was spotted at the Blue Heron Bridge in May. I've never seen a coloration like this, and I'm really curious what species it may be. Has anyone else spotted a similar scorpionfish in the Caribbean? Bonus points if you have photos, since our photos aren't the greatest. Thanks!

Can someone explain the microscope settings at a kindergarten level? :-)

My husband and I both have Olympus toughs. I’ve got the TG-5 and he’s got the Tg-6. I started with dual mounted strobes and hated how I overexposed everything. I switched to the ring light and loved it (I used it like a video light vs strobe) but now that we’ve gotten into super macro (the Blue...

Dr Hubby is brushing off weird urchin sting symptoms

Hi all! My husband is a doctor, and as such, makes for a terrible patient. Anyways, we’ve been in Hawaii and we’ve dove the last 12 days. Early on in the trip, he got pushed by surge into an urchin in his right shoulder. He developed localized red welts. He has taken antihistamines (Benadryl)...

Kona trip in four days- Dive op or stick to Shore?

:oops: So, I’m usually little miss plan everything a very long ways in advance. Until Covid and having our last March Hawaii trip cancelled, and feeling like every trip is somehow doomed to more cancellation.... and how’s everyone else doing on the anxiety front? Anyways, we did at...

Invisible shrimp with large front claws! BHB

I was looking through my pictures and came across my adorable Christmas tree worms. I noticed a little something at the base and zoomed in. I couldn't make out much at first, but I just about keeled over when I expanded my looking. I saw the barely visible outline of a claw, and realized that it...
