Not sure if Zzzquil is billed the same as Benadryl, but I know that when I use Zzzquil I feel really groggy the next day, way worse than if I take the Zopiclone. I would never take Zzzyquil and dive, a bottle of Rum would make me less loopy than those purple pills!

It seems from my research that Zopiclone is from a similar drug family as Ambien and it too cites problems with motor functions the following day! I can't say that I have ever felt impaired in any way the day after a tablet, and being Scottish, I have had my fair share of impairment :) BUT...

As a fairly new diver, if I knew that thumbing the dive would mean the whole group had to surface, might I start to overlook perhaps a few simple things that would normally have my thumb sticking straight up? I could definitely see how new or less confident divers would feel pressured to ignore...

Lol.....I used to think like that, right up until I cut my leg off with a chainsaw, carving a hole in the frozen ice to find a bottle of beer I dropped down there in the summer! :p

Welcome Bobbisox! I recommend diving somewhere warmer than Ontario to enjoy your retirement, and Jamaica is certainly warmer than our -20 degrees. I too am from freezing Ontario .........brrrrrrrrrr

No1 Padi rated dive store in Ontario, I believe is Float n Flag which is in Burlington, about 30 mins from Toronto. They have lots of specialty instructors and the best air fill system. I'd try there first.

Jeez this is awful! My condolences to the family for their loss. I too am 41 and going diving this week in Curacao so methinks it will be a trip to the dive shop to buy a CO analyzer. We are hearing this story too often!

Anomaly -I had the same problem as you in Grand Cayman. We were supposed to do our first checkout dive from the house reef but it was too rough and they took us out by boat. My son and I had to swim to the front of the boat to descend and by the time I fought the waves to get there with water...

It sounds like the above guidelines for tipping are for boat dives. I am going to Curacao on Sat and using a dive op that provides guided shore dives and I am also doing my advanced open water - what are the expected gratuities?... Should you tip after a course too? Many thanks
